I've played The Quarry five times this summer. The front nine has plenty of risk/reward opportunities with water and sand on most holes. The real fun starts on the back nine when you enter the old rock quarry. The holes circle the bottom of the quarry with plenty of elevation changes and two long par 3s. Forced carries across water on some holes are complimented by shorter holes that leave an easy sand wedge into the green. The fairways and greens are always in first class shape, even in the South Texas heat in August.
There are plenty of opportunities to layup or press your luck. This is why I believe this is among the best courses in San Antonio for a match play round.
The better time to play is early mornings before it becomes too hot. At times the air can be a little still on the back nine which makes it warmer. For this reason they have incredible afternoon rates (currently $29 after 2PM). In my book this course is only bested by TPC San Antonio and the two courses at La Cantera. Dollar for dollar it's hard to vote against The Quarry Golf Club.
