“Yum!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

The sticky buns- a must. Quick service. The baked goods are the real deal. Cheese Danish was delish, and the cookies are very rich! Would definitely recommend as part of the Salem experience.

“Delicious breads and pastries!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2014

The sourdough bread here is excellent! We also had a scone, a cream filled strawberry pastry and one of the best sticky buns I have ever had!! All freshly made with the freshest local ingredients. Definitely worth it to visit here!

“Best Bread Within Many Miles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

As a local, I go here often, for baguettes, pain a levain, muffins, scones and more. It's the real deal. Not cheap, but high quality, consistently. A real treasure for Salem. Usually I do take-out, as the seating area is a bit small and cramped. But some folks love that about it too!

“A Destination!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2014

We always stop at A & J when in Salem and often journey to Salem just to go there. A & J offers a variety of bake products and judged by the crowd it appeals to everyone. I love to toast in the AM and MUST have artisanal breads with my entrees. A & J satisfies both demands. Their Walnut Sourdough and Multigrain toast particularly well. The Multigrain is absolutely loaded with nuts and seeds which make it better for toasting than for a sandwiches in my opinion, unless you enjoy really dense bread. The Olive Loaf, Pain Levain, Baguette, and Ciabatta are wonderful accompaniments to entrees, especially Italian or Portuguese. As an experienced home baker, I wish I could replicate the variety and quality that A & J provides, but then again why bother when they are so close? Jacques Pepin often says that his choice for a "last supper" would be bread and very good butter! Well, you could not go wrong selecting A & J bread for that meal!!!

“Old school bakery in Salem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

I love love love this bakery! From the breads to the pastries to the coffee, you will be delighted at every step of the way with A & J. I love A & J because they pride themselves on unprocessed, homemade baked goods and bread - which is a rare thing in this time. This place also reminds me a bit of Paris, which is always a good thing in my mind. So, if you are a local and have not learned of this hidden gem yet, run there on Sunday morning and indulge. It is worth the effort.
