My husband and I are fairly frequent visitors to Salem (usually at least once or twice a year). We tend to avoid October, but circumstances brought us here on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd this year. We haven't done much of the "touristy" stuff since our first few visits, but we happened upon the Witches Cottage while meandering the side streets (as this isn't exactly on the main thoroughfare, and we hadn't heard of the Cottage before). It was late and we were just peeking in the window, but one of the workers was there and invited us to a free dress rehearsal of a new show that needed a live audience and some feedback. What a treat! It was an hour long, one man show of 2 spooky tales. The actor was phenomenal...really fantastic!!
We were so happy with the show and with the friendliness of the people there that we came back the next day to see their regular show, a 20-ish minute show about the witch trials and ghosts. The same actor plus an additional actor did the show, and then they came onstage afterwards to tell some more facts and answer questions. There were only 4 of us in the audience (and 4 during the dress rehearsal as well) but the actors played it with just as much vigor as to a full house. There were lots of fun special effects...not all techno and glossy, just great realistic effects (LOVED the "orbs" effect)...and enough to make you jump a few times.
The things I appreciated most about this place were the friendliness of all the staff members we met, the quality of the acting, and the quaintness of the theater. It's not a huge place, but they make the best of it for sure. I know they are going to be growing a bit in the future as far as getting more effects for the show (multimedia was one word I heard), changing their name, etc...but I really hope they don't lose the quaintness and intimacy of the current show.
And just as a last note, hubby and I were at a play the other night in our town ("The Haunting of Hill House") and we were talking about how much we missed the quality of the acting experience we got at Witches Cottage, especially during the hour long one-man show. Of course I liked the regular show with the 2 actors, but you gotta admit when one guy can carry a whole show for an entire hour (in front of just 5 people, mind you)....that's pretty awesome.
