Stopping in on an east-coast drive, we were delighted to discover the Daniels House. We found Kay, the innkeeper, to be most gracious and pleasant. We have visited many historic homes where the doorways have a plexiglass barrier lest the visitors might breathe upon the fine contents of the rooms, yet Kay has opened her home and allows guests to wander throughout to peer into the fascinating nooks in this 300 year old home. However, we had the worst night of sleep--the sheets were dirty, the bathroom tiles moldy, the rugs in bedroom and bathroom in serious need of vacuuming or washing. The house is old, and we could forgive the musty smell and perhaps some dust...but there was a blatant lack of care in basic cleanliness. Kay indicated that she has a hired girl to do her cleaning, and I believe she's been cheated. The sink and toilet were clean, but that was it. Everything else was covered in a thick blanket of dust bunnies. But the biggest horror was the kitchen...we peeped in, expecting to see something fabulous like the rest of the house (albeit dirty), but we found a horrendously dirty, piled with debris, disgustingly cluttered rat's nest. Immediately closing the door as we realized this part of the home was probably not intended for viewing, we felt as if we'd accidentally tresspassed into the owner's actual living space. However, knowing that the breakfast would likely emerge from this room, we made plans to exit before it could be served. We paid that night and departed at dawn so as not to offend. I would not trade this night for anything--the place was so interesting and Kay such a fine hostess. But...the cleaning is an issue. I would have to recommend one night, but certainly not ingesting anything prepared in the kitchen. And...bring your own sheets and a pair of slippers.
