“Perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2008

I had always wanted to visit Salem because Halloween is my favorite holiday, and what better place to celebrate than Salem! I decided to spend my 40th birthday there. I arrived in town around 5pm on a Wednesday in early October. I usually plan every detail of my trips, but hadn't had time. Most places in town were booked, and the Hawthorne had only a few rooms left at a high price! I was hesitant to stay there because I like new hotels better as they usually seem cleaner. But I had little choice so took the room. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't care for the decor (I don't care for antiques) but it was clean. The bathroom was small with little water pressure. The location, however, was perfect as I saw everything I wanted to see in Salem by walking from the hotel. I didn't use my car once. And actually the "feel" of the hotel (historic) fit in with the town of Salem and complimented by experience there. I would stay there again.

Overall it was a good stay.

Bathroom is small, rooms were satisfactory clean, mattress needed to be updated.

Central to everything, great spot.

Room 325 is supposedly haunted. We stayed in 326 ... the minute we walked in we felt we were being watched, were even brushed up against. I left my camera in the room, only to find later that evening, the settings were changed. Very intriguing.

Service was good, restaurant was a little slow. Food tasted decent though.

Lovely lobby, features.

This hotel is about 4 blocks from Commuter Rail stop from Boston on foot. We chose the Bed and Breakfast package which included hot breakfast each morning at Nathaniel's. However, BF options using the BB coupons are limited to 3 choices, or any item on menu under $10. The room was clean and spacious with 2 beds and 1.5 bath; the decor is early American. Room temperature adjustment option is limited to either AC or heat depending on the central system. Free USA Today and local papers are available. Fine dining options are limited in the historic part of town if you do not have a car. A few seafood restaurants are located at Pickering Wharf 2 blocks away; it was woefully deserted on a Sunday night. The Peabody Essex Museum is conveniently located a block away. Many shops selling witchcraft and ghost souvenirs abound, as do witch history museums. One computer with Internet access is available in the lobby at no charge.

Stayed here for two nights with my wife and two children (8&15) and we loved it. We booked one of the Derby rooms and were extremely impressed with the size of the room. As stated in previous reviews the bathrooms are a little on the small size. But do you really need an enormous bathroom anyway. I mean how long do you actually spend in there? We were on the fourth floor overlooking both the front of the hotel and Salem common. The hotel is a historic hotel and as such it's furnishings are not as modern/new as some of big chain hotels. To me though this added to it's charm and it seemed to fit in with Salems history. We booked the bed/breakfast package and were really glad we did. The breakfast was excellent and served in the lovely surroundings of Nathaniels restuarant. I would definitely recommend this option as it's excellent value. The service was also first class. The hotel has loads of free parking. The hotel describes it as limited but I would imagine it's only limited if you arrived when some function was on and there were loads of guests. From the hotel you can walk to all the various museums etc in Salem town. There are a number of reasonably priced places to eat at night, including the tavern in the hotel. I would recomend the Lobster Shanty. Good food, good beer and free live music. This was my first visit to Salem and was really impressed with it and the Hawthorne Hotel. Would definitely come back.

Arrived in Salem to find that booking had been changed been changed from the Salem Waterfront Hotel. The Hawthorne is on the list of Historic Hotels of America, It has a lovely lobby and the tavern on the ground floor is wonderful. Had to wait to get into my room so went for a look around. I walked down to the Salem Waterfront and noted that the Waterfront seemed to lack soul! Tidy and clean but the bathroom! Tiny! If you are unlucky you will get a room facing the back of the hotel: I was told I had a car park view; as the car park partially faces onto Salem Common this would not have been a problem. Unfortunately a car park view also includes a view of the opposite walls and a constant noise from the kitchen aircon units.
Complained about the noise and was given another room, one floor lower and several yards nearer to the noise! Decided to stay where I was. The rooms on the opposite side of the hallway all have views of the common.
This hotel has a load of history, and the story and development of the establishment is documented in numerous displays on the walls, all of this adds to the charm and it is easy to overlook the small faults with the room.
The staff were all as helpful as could be, you have to remember that this is a pretty popular hotel for weddings and other functions and as such the lobby, tavern reception are pretty busy. A lot of guests attending functions appear to stay in the hotel so it can get crowded.
It is fairly centrally located and everything you could want to see in Salem is within walking distance.
Breakfast was excellent.
All in all, a nice stay but you need to ask for a room facing the common.

The Hawthorne is one of the older hotels in Salem. Excellent location across from the Peabody Essex Museum, adequate free parking in the rear, interesting lobby and facade. Rooms are a bit frayed around the edges, and the bathroom is tiny, but generally clean and well maintained. Friendly staff. However, rooms that face the inner courtyard are above the kitchen fans and heating system- very noisy- too noisy to open windows. And, as they warn on the web site, they can only heat OR cool the entire hotel-with minor adjustments in the rooms. Not a problem in the winter or summer, but a pain in the spring and fall where the weather is changeable.

The prices for the breakfast buffet and the brunch buffet are as follows (per there web site, as of 08/23/08)

Sunday Breakfast buffet:
$15.95, 9 am to 10 am
Sunday Brunch buffet:
$28.95 adults
$13.95 for children under 12 years old
Complimentary for children under 3 years old
11:15 am – 2:00 pm
Featuring LIVE Jazz Music

The buffets are located in Nathaniel's restaurant, which is within the hotel. Nathanials is a beautiful restaurant, decorated in Colonial style with paintings and historic etchings on the walls.

The Sunday _brunch_ buffet is good, but not worth $30. IThere are _brunch_ buffets in Boulder, CO that are just as good for only $17. There's even one buffet in Boulder, CO that's so good that some people wait as much as an hour to be seated.

Instead, I'd recommend getting to the Hawthorne Hotel between before 9 AM and have the Sunday _breakfast_ buffet (9AM to 10AM, please call ahead to verify hours). But get there before 9AM because they're almost always sold out.

If you opt for the _brunch_ buffet make sure you don't miss the desserts. The deserts are located by the entrance/exit and are easy to miss. These desserts look gourmet, although they're probably nothing you haven't had before.

Also, if you opt for the _brunch_ buffet, ask to be seated away from the Jazz players, as they can get pretty loud.
