“Wonderful Historic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

The hotel served as a great central hub for our long weekend, with many of our destinations within easy walking distance of this centrally-located venue.
The historic hotel is such a pleasure, full of visual beauty and character. From a welcoming lobby to the ground-floor restaurant, tavern, and ball room, hotel guests have lots to see even before going up to the rooms.
We had a suite for the weekend, with a king bed, tons of closet space, and a generously sized sitting room with handsome furniture. The bed was extremely comfortable and the lush bedding made us not want to get up in the morning.
While it's true that there is not a coffee maker in the room, there are carafes in the lobby next to Nathaniel's, the formal dining room, for hotel guests. This coffee is top notch.
We recommend you eat at Nathaniel's at least once during your stay, the chef and staff go out of their way to make your meal exquisite. The Tavern is the other in-house dining option, and make sure to ask the server about daily specials, including daily drinks. The seasonal martinis are must-order cocktails.
The pleasant staff quickly responded to all of our requests, and helped make our stay quite enjoyable. One of the unique things this hotel does is to fly a different state flag and country flag outside every day, and a friend requested our state and country of origin for us, and having these flags flying on our last full day of our visit made us feel like extra special guests. The description of the daily flags is posted in the lobby, to the right of the elevators.
The hotel serves as host to many wedding parties, but on the guest room floors, there are signs clearly posted about their noise policy. Our suite was very quiet, day and night.
For people who want a memorable experience for a romantic getaway, or a central location for a historic exploration of Salem and the surrounding areas, the Hawthorne is an excellent choice of upscale accommodation.

Dear Morgen1967:

Wow! What a wonderful and comprehensive review. Thank you for giving the Hawthorne such high praise on every count.

I am thrilled to hear you enjoyed the flags flying above the Hotel. I am glad we were able to make you feel so at home during your stay with us. Our goal is to make every guest feel special throughout their time with us and we know what a difference little touches (like our flag program) can make.

I am glad to hear that your suite was well beyond what you expected. We have made many upgrades to our rooms in the past year – including major upgrades to the bedding – so hearing that you hardly wanted to leave your bed in the morning means we have done something very right!

Thank you again for this extremely kind and well-written review. The entire team at the Hawthorne really appreciates it when our guests take their experiences to Trip Advisor and I will be certain to share your words with them.

Hopefully we will see you again in Salem very soon.

Warm regards,

Juli Lederhaus
General Manager.

We chose the Hawthorne Hotel because of their great dog friendly policy. However we were impressed by the whole hotel, which has a fantastic sense of history but also some nice modern touches like free wifi, new bathrooms and very comfortable beds. The staff were all really friendly to us and to our small pup and the hotel had a very sensible policy (we had to leave a mobile number in case of problems and leave a "dog in room" sign) that enabled us to go out and see parts of Salem without having to worry about what we would do with the dog. The hotel is in a great location and we would definitely recommend it to others.

Dear Traveltraveltravel3:

Thank you for writing such a superb review. I truly appreciate you taking the time to come on Trip Advisor and respond to your recent experience with us. Your review will surely be a benefit to future visitors to Salem.

Salem is such a unique and exciting city; often best experienced on foot. Sometimes our four-legged friends can’t keep up with us which is why we are happy to allow pets to stay in their rooms during the day. I am glad that you felt our policy was not only fair, but helped make your stay in Salem more enjoyable.

Thank you again for your review. I will be certain to share your words with the entire Hawthorne staff.

Warm regards,

Juli Lederhaus

A beautiful location in historic Salem, but as the location was amazing, the historic part was something I would find charming in a well priced B &B, not so much in an historic EXPENSIVE hotel! The room looked over major street and the windows were not exactly "renovated". Our bathroom had little water pressure and was tiny and awkward with poor lighting. I am glad we stayed there once but I would definitely look for different accomadations were we to visit the area again.

Dear KGrisham:

We are very puzzled by your review, since it is dated for a stay in December of 2011, and our renovations were not fully completed until May of 2012. If you stayed here in December our rates would be at their very lowest, so we are even more puzzled, because it appears more like you more likely might have stayed here as part of our Halloween package, which is when the rates are at their highest. Clearly there is a pricing cycle for everything, which can have as much to do with demand as anything.

I would happy to speak with you about your experience. If you wish to speak to me, you can reach me at 978-744-4080.

Thank you for sharing your concerns, but we really do hope you will direct them to us personally, as it is through open and honest dialogue that resolutions can be made to areas of concern, such as the price/value equation.

Sincerely,

Juli Lederhaus

I had a wonderful time at Salem, and the hotel was a big part of it.
The room was small, good for one person (at least the one I stayed) - but it was clean, and comfortable. What really makes a difference at this hotel is the staff - always helpful, very polite and extremely nice!

Dear Lu_Mankel:

Thank you so much for your high praise regarding your stay with us. Salem has so much to offer visitors that it is always wonderful to hear that we were able to play a small role in your love of our city.

Though we do have some rooms that are on the smaller size, it is often adequate when you are traveling alone and looking to spend the majority of your time exploring Salem.

I am thrilled to hear that the staff made you feel at home during your time with us. We know how essential each member of our team is here at the Hawthorne and I will be sure to share your kind words with them.

Thank you again for your review. I hope to see you again very soon.

Warm regards,

Juli Lederhaus

The Hawthorne Hotel has two outstanding restaurants onsite that are designed to fit every traveler's taste and pocketbook. It is also very pet friendly. Our cat Pumpkin was given a Halloween toy complements of the staff. Centrally located near the world-class Peabody Essex museum and waterfront attractions, why stay anywhere else? We don't. We travel to the Hawthorne Hotel to savor the cuisine and enjoy the warm hospitality of the staff every month. A historic hotel with up to date amenities like PC laptop connections. .

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Salem Common have a wonderful view.

A lovely historic hotel. Room was bright and clean with modern amenities. Bath room was small but lovely. Located in the center of Salem, close to shopping and museums. The hotel has a pub and restaurant which were delightful.

Dear kimmys2020:
Thank you so much for your kind review. I am thrilled to hear that everything was perfect during your stay.
In the past year we have updated all of our linens and now have new, locally-made pillow top mattresses in all of our guest rooms. We also put double the number of really nice, "scrunchable" pillows on each bed. We made these upgrades in the hope of giving all of our guests the best night’s sleep possible. I am thrilled to hear you were able to completely relax and unwind while you were with us.

Thank you again for your kind review. We truly appreciate it when guests take the time to share their experiences firsthand with everyone on Trip Advisor.
