“Highly recommended with caveats”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

Hacienda del Sol is a small (50ish rooms), upmarket, historic hotel located in the beautiful foothills of the Santa Catalina mountains. It has character and soul in spades, something its chain neighbors don't have. The grounds are beautifully landscaped; the fragrance of flowering plants is everywhere; the atmosphere is unhurried and gracious; the staff genuinely seems to care and the restaurant is a wonderful fine dining experience. We were there for a mid-winter sun and relaxation get-away.

Our suite was large and comfortable, but was not furnished as nicely as it might have been. Bed comfort was excellent. The hotel needs someone with design sense to pull it together. With $5,000 of capital investment in our room, they could charge 50% more. The product isn't broken, just missing a half beat.

The hotel also needs an "adults-only" pool and/or patio. Our pool karma and the perfection of the setting was obliterated by an incessantly screeching two year old and her loud, always-talking, uber-oblivious mother, plus the mother's sisters, cousins and aunts. An adults-only space would have given everyone a place to be. The land is there and, again, the investment would be minimal.

The restaurant far exceeded our expectations!!! Wow, this is serious, contemporary fine dining. Check out the Zagat's review. In addition to the stunning views out the windows, the restaurant's bonus feature is its stunning staff, each one is a looker and good at their job too. Who knew?

I love small hotels with lots of character, for which I am willing to put up with imperfections, like lamps with burnt out bulbs and some odd bits of furniture. So, despite the Loud family at the pool, I was very, very pleased. I have stayed at the Westin and, for me, Hacienda del Sol wins the comparison hands down. You, however, may not see things like I do.

With limited capital investment and a quiet area for adults, this charmer would be perfection for all of us who love small, historic inns.

Room Tip: 37 isn't the best suite.

Thank you for taking some time to post a review of your recent experiences here at the Hacienda. I appreciate your warm thoughts on both our grounds and the service level of our staff. My apologies that you did not find the peace and relaxation expected from our pool area. This is typically a quiet area to unwind and we should have done a better job in monitoring the situation to avoid disturbing you and other guests who are looking for a quiet respite. I am glad you mentioned some of the improvements we could make in Suite 37, we have recently brought in a new couch in the living room and will be refinishing the bathup in the next week and all rooms are being looked at for potential upgrades. The Grill sends its uttmost thanks for your thoughts and we all hope to see you in the future.

I laughed out loud when I read gams1000 review - they were right. Our lamp didn't work either, but our shower was better. The best things about this place were the landscaping and the lovely scent of the citrus trees wafting everywhere. We were happy with our room - it was comfortable and well furnished (if you disregard the lamp...). Unlike gams1000, we would stay here again. The ambiance, pool area, lovely room with nice furnishings and great restaurant more than balanced out any rough spots.

Room Tip: I've heard that the old, historic dorm rooms are quite small and not comfortable - avoid

Thank you for taking a moment to provide a review. Jeff our Owner in charge of the Landscaping sends his appreciation of your thoughts and hopefully next time you visit we can have you taste some of the oranges and grapefuits those trees provide along with the delightful scents. I also had occasion to speak with him yesterday and he says that the lighting issue is our # 1 priority right now and gams and your reviews have driven the point home. I am glad that despite the lamp you were happy with your room and other highlights on the grounds. Hope to see you again, next time with the rough spots smoothed out. Regards

Loved the beautiful historic common areas of the resort, enjoyed the views and restaurant and are glad we had the experience of staying at this unusual place. But were we to return to Tucson, we probably would not stay here for a second go-round given a string of oddities which, individually weren't so tragic, but, taken together, left us feeling a bit like Cinderella looking at a big old pumpkin where a fine coach once had been.

To wit: Hotel room wattage often is less than our aging eyes would like but the scant available lighting in our room was reduced by half when, upon our nighttime arrival, we discovered the bedside lamp didn't work. Called the desk clerk to ask if he could bring down a new lightbulb only to find out that the problem was, in fact, a broken switch. "Oh well," we said, "just bring us any old desk or floor lamp so we can at least see." "Uh, no," he said, apologetically, he couldn't do that because "we usually just take them from another room [whenever something's broken] but all our rooms are full right now so I can't." Well. Great. Now we know why our room has a broken lamp instead of a working one. Harrumph. So, no lamp that night (they did fix it the next day) which meant we'd not be able to look over our touring plans for the next day. Good excuse to just head off for a hot shower which tends to cure all. But then, we encountered the bathroom. At first glance it was pretty -- in a quaint, seedy-posh kind of way -- with handmade wall tiles and a beautiful tile sink sitting in an antique-d wood cabinet. A period set piece, in harmony with the historic spaces around us. Opened the shower curtain and all the charm instantly fizzled at the sight of a cheaep-o, c. 2006 white generic plastic shower nozzle with a long twisted-up plastic extension hose screwed, in makeshift fashion, into the original plumbing. Not only is this thing downright ugly but it also lowers the height of the shower head so as to make standing under it, while also avoiding ensnarement by the tubing, an uncomfortable game of solo-shower-Twister in what is an old 1930s (?) narrow tub. Harumph again. Time for bed which, thankfully, turns out to be quite comfortable so we sleep soundly. But then, flash forward two nights later: we return to the hotel, after a long day of touring, to find the parking lot jammed to capacity and have to park down at the far end of the lot. "Wow, busy tonight!" we say then think "Hey, let's sit outside our room with a glass of wine before heading off to dinner" as we hike back up through the parking lot toward our room." But, then, we round the corner from the parking lot and, 'Oh no!' Where, for the past 2 1/2 days there had stood two chairs and a table at every room doorway, there now was a weird tableau of all these chair pairs angled towards vacant spaces. And while we never found out for sure where all those little tables went, we think there's a pretty good chance that the big function audibly going on elsewhere at the hotel probably had needed every single table from outside our door, just as all their cars in the lot had needed every single 'guest room only' parking spot just outside our room, just as some other guest had needed the bedside lamp from inside our room.

On the upside, whoever cleaned our room truly did an excellent job each day. I just hope s/he got the generous tips we left him/her and it didn't get pocketed by the musical chairs staff.

Thank you for taking the time to add a review and to highlight specific areas where we need to concentrate to service guests better. The explanation for not finding you adequate working lighting is completely unacceptable to me and will be addressed. I apologize this issue should never have occured if we had done a proper job of finding and fixing before you arrived. We are in the process of upgrading the light bulbs and increasing the amount of lamps in each room to remedy this. I am appalled that our other guests would intrude on the privacy of your room and the furniture which you paid to use and also that we were not on top of the situation to stop this before it became an issue. All of our guests should be treated equally and feel secure in their surroundings. I will address your shower concerns with our Managing Partner and hopefully we can work bringing these to modern quality. My hope is that once the issues you have brought to us have been rectified that we can have you back to give us another chance to give you the princess experience you deserve without any midnight pumpkins

If you're in Tucson, drive into the foothills and stay at the Hacienda. This one-time girls school, then dude ranch is now a wonderfully laid back hotel with fabulous long views, especially at sunset. Moreover, the Grill serves some of the finest food in town and boasts a wine list as long as a Russian novel -- a good Russian novel. But if you're not a reader, don't be intimidated: the sommelier will carefully guide you to the perfect pairing for whatever you might be ordering. Rooms at the Hacienda range from small apartments to historic gems. True, a few of the more finicky types might disparage them as a tad funky, but those of us who like a little personality with their furnishing will be delighted. I can't think of anything better than poking the last glowing ashes of a remnant fire before turning in for the night; a pleasure few high-end resorts can offer in these days of molded plastic and muted everything.

Room Tip: Ask the reservation manager for guidance. They're straighht-shooters and will help if they can.

Thank you for your kind review and I like the extra bit of personality to your review as you noted our hotel to be as well. Funny you call our wine list long like a Russian novel we refer to it as the Bible for its 50+ page length. I am glad to pass along your thoughts to Dylan, Kiel and Justin over at the Grill, they take great pride in the wine program. We definately arent a place of muted anything and we appreciate your enjoyment of our these quirks and personality. Love the room tip we try and keep things simple and straightforward with reservation inquiries. Regards

This hotel was built in the 1920s as a ranch, then became a "high end" boarding school for girls. At that point there was nothing near by other than the foothills and desert. They have maintained the feeling of history in the different buildings. Some of the guest rooms are the original girls' dorm rooms which are built around a courtyard.

The grounds are beautifully maintained. They grow their own herbs and some veggies for their 2 restaurants.
If you are looking for fancy, Hacienda is not for you. If you are looking for something a bit unique and historic, you will love this place.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review and for the fantastic picture from the Courtyard, you found quite an original view to take it from. I am glad you were able to enjoy and appreciate the unique history of our space as well as the hard work Jeff and our Groundskeepers do to make our gardens bounty. We definately try to keep things relaxed and not to fancy, more like Southwest casual. Regards and I hope you love us enough to come back and see us

This is a historic hotel property, beautifully located in the Catalina foothills. The accommodations range from small and historic rooms overlooking the courtyard to large and luxurious casitas scattered around the property. Many have amazing views of the mountains and/or the city of Tucson below. Every staff member was warm and incredibly helpful (especially Brian) and made us feel completely welcome even though we were paying the lowest possible room rate. The outdoor pool and hot tub were delightful and quiet and had wonderful views. The complimentary coffee (in room and in the lobby area) was the best ever of any hotel, from the local Tucson company, Arbuckle. The only disappointment was the Terraza restaurant, where the food and service were very uneven. The hotel claims to have 20,000 bottles of wine. I hope they aren't all as poorly stored as the two that we tried. We had loved the Grill on previous trips to Tucson, but this time since the Terraza was so poor, we didn't want to risk even more money on the Grill. All of the common spaces and event rooms were beautiful. This place is unique and about as far as you can get from the ubiquitous corporate chains. It also compares very favorably to Westward Look, which charges more for the rooms and a wholly unwarranted "resort fee."

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view the smaller rooms are cheaper and very comfortable but lack adequate sto...

I appreciate you taking the time to write a review of your recent experiences here at the Hacienda. Thank you for your kind mention of my name it was my pleasure to be of service no matter if you were staying for free or paying $ 500 per night. I have shared your thoughts on the dining experience with Matthew, the GM of our restaurants and he has expressed his apologies and disappointment for your less than satisfactory feelings. I cannot tell you how many guests rave about the Arbuckle coffee we carry and I too enjoy a cup or two a day. Thank you for mentioning that we fail to nickel and dime guests with resort fees, as well as parking and internet. I hope you can come back and see us and give the Grill a second try as well.

i recently visited Hacienda del Sol and wonder why all the great reviews???? First--i must give kuddos to the awesome food--it is totally a 5 star dining moment--but on the other hand my historic room left alot to be desired. This room needs to be updated--i don't mind rustic but i do mind old & tired-often unless i took my wine glass outside it didn't get picked up and maid service ??? -my tv wasn't a flat screen--my bathroom had a very tiny mirror -hard to see yourself and lighting wasn't good either -The pool area has no service for beverages and old towels to use--i was totally bummed!! I was told to bring my room key to the front desk even though i left at 5:30 am staff would be there--there is someone there 24 hours a day-well guess what--i couldn't find a soul--never felt that WELCOME FEELING--GLAD YOU ARE HERE atmosphere--felt cheated in some way.

Before I address your room and pool concerns I must sincerely apologize for our complete lack of making you feel welcome and treating you as a most valued guest during your stay. There is no excuse for this and certainly not a standard we are willing to accept. The Historic rooms are definately not for every guest but I would like to share that we are in the process of updating to add modern amenities while keeping the history intact and now all Historic rooms do have flat screen tv's, all our rooms have new mattresses as well as installing a phone at the pool to provide guests with access to drink/food service while relaxing. Our Housekeeping Manager John has also read your concerns and is addressing the pool towel and Housekeeping service issues. The overnight shift is definately a tricky situation with 1 agent who can be called away for deliveries, maintenance and in your case making the morning coffee however I agree this does not mitigate your feelings of a lack of personal attention. I sincerely hope we may have the opportunity to wow you in the future and have you experience one of the larger and more modern rooms we have to offer.
