In late April of this year, my husband and I spent two nights at the Azure Gate Bed and Breakfast Inn in Tucson, Arizona, which Christine and Dennis Widman own and operate, and it was a highlight of our time in southern Arizona. We enjoyed not only the accommodations and setting but also the Widmans themselves, who are sincerely welcoming hosts and fascinating individuals. We stayed in the Saguaro Room, which was attractively decorated, offered lots of closet space (including room to stash the luggage), and had its own private courtyard with small table and two chairs, perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails, or simply for sitting and listening to the wide variety of bird calls. The inn’s common areas included a library, offering books to read as well as DVDs to watch (each room has its own TV); a large living room off the spacious kitchen; and a dining room where we had a gourmet breakfast both mornings, professionally prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely scrumptious. We even photographed our plates before we devoured the five-star fixings—more like a dinner entrée than a breakfast. Off the kitchen and dining room is an expansive patio, with another dining table, private sitting areas, and an inviting, crystal-clear swimming pool. The grounds surrounding the inn are landscaped with native plants, which we especially appreciated since we went to Arizona to see the desert—not mowed lawns of green grass and plantings that require heavy watering. The natural setting also attracts a variety of wildlife, including long-eared desert cottontails and a nice diversity of birds: lesser goldfinches swarming the feeders, gila woodpeckers nesting in Saguaro cactus and feeding on its flowers, gambles quail calling and running about, and hummingbirds flashing their gorgeous colors. The Widman’s respect for the natural world, genuinely friendly demeanor, and knowledge of the immediate as well as more distant parts of southern Arizona were a perfect combination, and we look forward to going back to Azure Gate time and time again.
