“Desert oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

We'd booked to stay at the Azure Gate for two nights at the start of our week driving around Arizona. But after one night, we knew we wanted to stay for longer! Fortunately Christine and Dennis were able to let us stay one extra night so we were lucky enough to enjoy this desert oasis for longer.

As fairly quiet people, we were a little hesitant at first about the 'all sit round the breakfast table' start to the day. Normally that's our worst nightmare - having to talk to strangers before the first cup of coffee of the day!!! But we need not have worried. The other guests were fascinating and we made some firm friends as we shared Dennis's amazing gourmet breakfasts.

Such kind hosts. - it felt more like staying at an. Old friends home than a b&b. the room and communal space were comfy and stylish with some beautiful touches such as the hand glazed tiles I n the bathroom. And Christine's amazing table decoration was a joy to see each day.

We spent some happy time mooching around the grounds - spotting birds and photographic the flora. The cacti were in bloom so it was gorgeous.

We are already a planning our return!!

My one night visit to Azure Gate B&B was too short! The proprietors make every effort to make your stay comfortable and personally tailored to your tastes and interests - all without being fussy or intrusive. They provide heaps of easy to use resources on local events, restaurants, and activities. A really lovely and serene desert garden with naturalistic landscaping is enlivened by a variety of wildlife drawn to fountains, feeders, and plantings. I especially enjoyed my nighttime swim after a very long drive, and the tasty breakfast offerings were delicious and memorable. Dennis and Christine obviously put their heart and soul into this operation, and it shows. I hope to stay at Azure Gate again and take full advantage of the great location, calming vibe, and very kind hospitality

We have stayed with Christine and Dennis at the Azure Gate now at least four times. Every time we have the most gorgeously presented, delicious and creative breakfasts with superb custom-mixed creative breakfast juices (my favorite is mango/lime). I always dip in the lovely sparkling clear swimming pool and rest my head on the edge to watch the birds that come close to feed on the ground (mostly the doves) and the thistle feeder (the many warblers and finches). Last year we saw a clutch of quail eggs hatch in a glazed pot by the entrance courtyard - and I helped the little balls of fluff find their way out from under the cactus to unite with their worried mom! A wander around the property or the neighborhood can reveal wildlife, such as the javalina that we saw on the road, or perhaps the many bobcats that Dennis has photographed. Be sure not to miss looking at the wonderful books of his photography around the western US (including Alaska) - he has encountered over 450 bears in the course of his photography travels!!! This is a haven for birders and anyone who loves wildlife and very close to Sauaro National Park where we always take our pre-breakfast and pre-dinner hikes. Also, Dennis and Christine offer a superb library of informational resources that you may borrow (such as topographical maps of the National Park) or brochures, plus restaurant recommendations and reviews. We will go back next spring!

In late April of this year, my husband and I spent two nights at the Azure Gate Bed and Breakfast Inn in Tucson, Arizona, which Christine and Dennis Widman own and operate, and it was a highlight of our time in southern Arizona. We enjoyed not only the accommodations and setting but also the Widmans themselves, who are sincerely welcoming hosts and fascinating individuals. We stayed in the Saguaro Room, which was attractively decorated, offered lots of closet space (including room to stash the luggage), and had its own private courtyard with small table and two chairs, perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails, or simply for sitting and listening to the wide variety of bird calls. The inn’s common areas included a library, offering books to read as well as DVDs to watch (each room has its own TV); a large living room off the spacious kitchen; and a dining room where we had a gourmet breakfast both mornings, professionally prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely scrumptious. We even photographed our plates before we devoured the five-star fixings—more like a dinner entrée than a breakfast. Off the kitchen and dining room is an expansive patio, with another dining table, private sitting areas, and an inviting, crystal-clear swimming pool. The grounds surrounding the inn are landscaped with native plants, which we especially appreciated since we went to Arizona to see the desert—not mowed lawns of green grass and plantings that require heavy watering. The natural setting also attracts a variety of wildlife, including long-eared desert cottontails and a nice diversity of birds: lesser goldfinches swarming the feeders, gila woodpeckers nesting in Saguaro cactus and feeding on its flowers, gambles quail calling and running about, and hummingbirds flashing their gorgeous colors. The Widman’s respect for the natural world, genuinely friendly demeanor, and knowledge of the immediate as well as more distant parts of southern Arizona were a perfect combination, and we look forward to going back to Azure Gate time and time again. Please check out their website to get a closer look at their unique and extraordinarily special place.

This was our second stay at Azure Gate. We truly love this place. Dennis and Christine have created a wonderful oasis in the desert. Vacations can be stressful and exhausting, but after a week at Azure Gate we are rested and refreshed. We love to stay in the Catalina house, but all of the rooms/houses are comfortable and charming. Every morning we wonder what delicious treat is being prepared for breakfast. Dennis is a fabulous chef. On this visit the apple strudel french toast was rated off the charts. Dennis and Christine are very knowledgeable about Tucson and the southwest generally. They are ready with tips, directions, etc. whatever your interests. We can't wait to return next year.

Stayed in April with my husband. Christine and Dennis are truly lovely people and definitely made the place feel like our home too. Christine gave us a tour, showed us the great books she had organized where you can actually take out printed directions for all the attractions and restaurants nearby. We stayed in the Sabino room but would prefer staying in one of the Casita's next time - Christine let us go in the one next to the house - stunning. The other room opposite has a bathroom in between us and them so doors were noisy. Just that we are light sleepers I guess. Dennis's breakfasts were stupendous and we really liked watching him perform in the kitchen while sipping our coffee - the kitchen was the hub! Such amazing food! We went to the Sonoran Desert museum, Old Tucson and Mt Lemmon and then one day lounged by the pool - so tranquil. Our only thought - we did not enjoy driving through Tucson traffic to get places. Again our bugbear and others might not mind cities - but we wanted to be away from anything 'city like'.

Room Tip: I would recommend choosing one of the 'casitas'.
