Was there in September...102 at 1pm at the base of the road. After a few short stops at the top (past the ski lifts) was a blissful 60! The drive up is beautiful, you start in a cactus wonderland after ~4k it changes into a green low scrub looking area. At 7k you abruptly start seeing a proliferation of coniferous and it gets denser the higher up you go.
The drive isn't too scary, long gentle switchbacks. Make sure you have gas as there isn't any to be had at the top...tis 25 miles or so each way.
The top had beautiful views of Tucson and beyond. There is a nice little ski restaurant that serves sandwiches and craft beer. In Summerhaven - a little village - there is a cute store that sells yummy but pricey cookies...worth it though as a treat.
Great way to spend an afternoon, comes highly recommended.
