“More than we expected!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Tanque Verde for four nights at the end of May. We had an amazing time! The staff was lovely, the rooms were great - huge! We met great people, and the activities were wonderful. My husband had never been on a horse, and we did the Mountain Adventure Ride, and some lessons. I also managed to pass the lope check and did a loping ride, which was great! It wasn't very busy, which was enjoyable, and my husband and I had our mountain bike guides to ourselves when we went out. All were great, but Koi was particularly exceptional! Their bikes were awesome quality. The nature centre was great fun and the staff very knowledgeable. The tennis courts definitely need some work and we didn't end up using them - we were told that they were next on the list to upgrade, which would make this place even more impressive. The food, particularly the breakfasts and desserts were amazing! I would say the dinners were the least impressive of the meals, and they were still good, just not as knock down amazing as those pancakes :) We were a bit unsure at first given what appeared to be a pretty high cost, but given all that's included, it is an excellent value. I can imagine (and from what I heard from other guests) that the kids program is awesome and it is a great family oriented spot, which is still suitable for a romantic vacation. It was getting super hot in the afternoons by the time we got there (late May), so we mostly relaxed and enjoyed the pool at that time of day - all the activities started nice and early to avoid the head, which was good. For people there purely for horsey activities, it appeared to be fantastic, but Tanque Verde offers enough for everyone to do, even if they aren't comfortable with or interested in riding every day. It was really like a time warp, with no TVs in the bedrooms, and the homey feel and freedom to do as much or as little as you wanted was really enjoyable. I would highly recommend it!

Room Tip: The casitas are huge! I'm pretty sure the sofa was pull out, so I think they'd do a family...

We have been to Tanque Verde Ranch 11 times since first discovering it's amazing charm in 2007. On a previous visit we were asked by the CEO why we keep coming back and to be honest there are so many reasons it's almost impossible to list them all, but here are a few:

The fantastic welcome you receive from staff who we now consider as friends including those on the front desk, in the restaurant and especially in the Dog House.

The wranglers and their expert horsemanship - some guests have reported they think they are stand offish, rude and can be patronising. We have not encountered any such behaviour at all and have to say that we trust them all implicitly to ensure we stay safe whilst riding in dangerous terrain as well as matching up with the right horse.

The horses are amazing too - we have ridden large and small horses including thoroughbreds, drafts, arabs, quarter horses and even mustangs. Tanque Verde has a reciprical arrangement with a ranch in California. The California horses spend the winter at Tanque Verde, which extends the choice of horses to ride even further. So for those of you who want to challenge your riding ability and ride a variety of horses this is place to go.

You do have to pass a lope check before you are considered "safe" enough to participate in faster rides in the Saguaro National Park. We have known this to cause some controversy with guests who fail, but it is important to point out that this is for the safety of all involved, the individual, other guests, the wrangler (who is responsible for you when you're on their ride) and the horse. The terrain is dangerous and horses can trip and fall so you need to know what to do in an emergency and be "ride aware" at all times. The only point I would raise in connection with this is that we have taken a lope check on every visit and I wonder whether this is necessay.

We have also met the owners of the ranch on numerous occasions and each time they genuinely appreciate our business and make us feel like members of their extended family. A number of repeat guests who we have met also feel like extended family and we all try to arrange our trips to coincide, so there is definitely a feeling of belonging which we haven't ever experienced anywhere else.

We spend most of our time at the ranch riding - up to four hours per day, which is made up of three hours loping and one hour walking in the summer and four hours loping in the winter when it's cooler. However, for the non rider or if you just fancy a change there is plenty of other activities to do - hiking, birding, fishing and even wine tasting. There is a nature centre and given the diverse flora and fauna of the region it's a paradise for nature lovers. We have seen a wide range of animals whilst out on the trail including rattle snakes, gila monsters, bob cats, coyotes, badgers, javelina, mule deer, grey desert fox and jack rabbits. There is also a wide variety of birds around the ranch such as red cardinals, cactus wrens, woodpeckers, quail, red tailed & coopers hawks, humming birds, heron, kingfishers, flycatchers and many more. The ranch also has it's own spa, jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor pools, gym and tennis courts which again appeals to those who don't ride or want to do something different.

If you decide to venture off the ranch, then again there is plenty to do including the Sonora Desert Museum, Pima Air & Space Museum, Tombstone and Mount Lemmon are also close by and all are well worth a visit.

We can't review the ranch without commenting on the food and accomodation, so here goes. The food has got better and better over the years with a huge variety of options at every meal time. There is a Western and Mexican feel to the menus and there are healthy options too for the figure conscious. Fruit, muffins, pastries, tea, coffee, water and juice are available 24 hours per day so you will never starve or go thirsty (provided you drink lots of water). The Dog House is the ranch saloon and is a great place to relax and watch the sun go down with a local beer or cocktail. Lisa and Julie Ann are great behind the bar and will even arrange to bring your food over from the restaurant on an evening if requested.

We have stayed in a variety of rooms over the years and can honestly say we have been happy with all of them - very spacious, some with lounge areas & a fireplace, all with a bath (very important after a day in the saddle) and all with spectacular views. They aren't modern, which we really approve of - afterall the ranch was established in 1868, so modern minimalistic would not work. Rooms are always clean with an abundance of fresh towels and linen, a small kitchen area and digital radio so that you can keep in touch with what is going on in the outside world if you need to.

All in all we love this place, take it from us, it is addictive and we will be back again later in the year.

We go to alot of dude ranches and really enjoy the experience. This ranch is really beautiful and definitely could cater to corporate functions or parties. Lots of space for private functions. The accommodations are really well done and we stayed in one of the jacuzzi Villas. The food was also good and we enjoyed the meals. They include extra activities and cater to lots of interests beside horses...if you have a mixed group where some don't ride, this is perfect! Be sure to try a lesson with the Tennis pros! Now for a few suggestions: We found the personnel working at the ranch inconsistent in their attitude to guests...some were excellent and went out of their way to make our stay perfect...unfortunately some were, at best, bored with you. This seemed to range from the servers in the restaurant to the wranglers and the riding instructor! Hope this review doesn't sound negative because I gave it a good rating. I think we will give this ranch another try in the future because sometimes there are just staff transitions going on and that can change.

We wanted to go for an authentic dude ranch experience and were not disappointed. Going in May was just great as the. Ranch was fairly quiet. Our son was the only one n the Buckaroo rides and he loved it. The early morning trail rides were great and just before it got too hot to be out. Mountain biking trails were fantastic and catered from novice to experienced with a good load of fun. Food was great also from the breakfast at the homestead to the BBQ and the restaurant had a good choice of dishes catering to all tastes. An amazing place to stay with really great staff who made us feel really welcome . Would love to go back again!

The ranch environment is gorgious, the food was excellent, I loved the pool and the doghouse saloon, the room was lovely until we had mices and found out lots of droppings under beds. We barely slept the last night. For that reason, the ranch gave us a credit for our horseback riding. It was appreciated. I had nothing to say until this last night.

Unfortunately for the ranch, there is a thief among their housekeeper. Fortunately for me, It was nothing precious that has been stolen. But the housekeeper did not know if my earrings left on the table were real and precious stone. And while I was gone for a horseback riding, on my return, the room was clean and earrings were gone.

I asked the manager to check with the lady cleaning room 50 on May 2nd, 2013. I was leaving the day after, but I have never heard anything about this unacceptable situation since then. I would have expect an e-mail, it is sad for the ranch that I have to report this, more than for me.

Other than that, we had a nice stay.

Context: widely travelled in the USA; very many cities, parks, beaches, road trips, cruises etc..........but never been to a dude ranch (and never been horse riding!). A wonderful stay from start to finish and would love to return. Ranch was lovely and peaceful, with wonderful views and great food. Staff were superb, helpful and friendly. If you don't click with the horse riding, there are many other activities on offer from fishing and mountain biking, to hiking and tennis and, of course, the spa. Loved the wranglers, who were totally pleasant and helpful. Always reticent about singling out individuals, but a big shout out to Melissa (activities), Karen, Cat and Joe (wranglers) and (of course) Lisa (Doghouse saloon) who was absolutely brilliant! Overall, could not recommend a better place to stay for anyone thinking about going for a dude ranch experience. Wonderful!!!!!

We returned for another national sales meeting and TVR was even better than we remembered. The remote location and no in-room TV's make it the perfect site to promote the networking and team building we desire for our sales team. Every event was executed perfectly and every staff member is friendly and always ready to please. There are plenty of riding options and outdoor activities to keep everyone happy when free time allows. The guest rooms and baths are very nice and spacious but the scenic views are the true star.....the real stars are not bad either as the sky glows nightly. The meals were amazing from the delicious pancakes at breakfast to the abundant salad selections and hearty lunch items served daily with plenty of sweet treats to temp too! Nightly the dinners did not disappoint from the tasty BarBQ and steaks under the cottonwoods to the gourmet choices in the dining room.....just outstanding! A truly wonderful return experience that exceeded expectations. Thanks TVR .
