“Great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

The location is wonderful for hiking and relaxing. The property is older but well kept. The hot tub did not work for our five day stay, very dissappointing! The rooms are large. Our two bedroom two bath unit was great for four adults. No wifi in rooms.

Room Tip: We faced the mountains, very nice. Patio was great.

A combination of minor surgery and new chemotherapy treatment meant that my time in Tucson could be unpleasant. I understand that this accomodation was donated to the Cancer Society of America by Shell Hospitality, and the Cancer Society arranged for my wife and I to stay here for the duration of my treatment. We were greeted at the front desk by a very friendly and helpful member of staff, who followed up with several calls to the casita to make sure we had everything we needed. We did need one small thing, and that was delivered to the door within minutes. The casita and amenities were wonderful - I was able to sleep after the surgery, while my wife did her work in the living room. The 'text' checkout was also a plus as I had to leave early on the last morning. We will likely return as 'paying' customers in the future.

We spent a week here in early December and loved it! The front desk staff were all excellent and interested in making our stay enjoyable. We booked this as a timeshare Getaway. We love staying at villas like these versus hotels because of their space, full kitchens and great rates. I will try and book Starr Pass Golf Suites if we return to Tucson.

The Unit:
They are all one story. The entire area is beautifully landscaped in desert plants and well tended by staff. There was a spacious great room with fireplace and a large bedroom and separate bathroom and a galley kitchen with all appliances. There was a small balcony off the great room. A big plus was the bed. It was a king tempurpedic, the best bed we've ever experienced at any place we have stayed. These are quite expensive and we were thrilled to have such a quality item. Our view, in unit 63a, was of the golf course, with a long view of the city. Starr Pass is located in the hills southwest of Tucson in a very upscale community of homes. The night lights of Tucson provided a beautiful backdrop to each evening.

We didn't use the restaurant, but were frequent visitors to the fitness center and pool. The outdoor hot tub was closed for repairs the entire time of our stay. The fitness center was well equipped and large, though the treadmills, which I use, were very dated. There was a good variety of equipment in the center. The pool was huge and had comfortable chairs and loungers.

The Starr Pass Golf Course was magnificent, though pricey. Club rentals were an outrageous $69 per round!

There were hiking trails right outside our unit and throughout Starr Pass, but the front desk didn't have good maps. The Marriott Starr Pass Hotel, a beautiful facility, is a short, free shuttle ride from the units. You can't use the pool facility there, unfortunately.

Drawbacks:
There weren't many, and they were insignificant in the overall picture. The chairs at the breakfast bar were uncomfortable to the point where we didn't use them after the first day. My wife thought the walls were stark and could use some pictures, etc. The main annoyance, though out of the control of Starr Pass, is that the resort lies right under a main flight path to the airport. Planes come in low all day and much of the evening.

Tips:
*Book golf rounds on golfnow, where I found a rate 70% off the quoted rates at the pro shop. Bring your clubs, though, as rentals are outrageous.
*There are few scheduled activities, so this is not the best place to bring children. In fact, we saw no children the entire week, though it was a school week. However, that fact seldom stops people from taking their kids out for vacations.
*Take the free shuttle to the Marriott, as visitor parking is non-existent.
*You are very close to many outstanding attractions here and the front desk will be happy to assist you.

We spent a week in December at Starr Pass with our time share exchange. I called ahead to ask for a first floor unit with a desert view and was told that all the units are one story and the buildings are surrounded by the desert (2 pluses). We had a lovely view of the desert and setting sun from our patio which was furnished with a table and 2 comfortable chairs. The furnishings inside were fresh and clean and decorated with a southwest flavor. The furniture and bed were VERY comfortable. It is nice to have a full kitchen and laundry in the unit. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The location is great - in the desert BUT real close to activities, stores, and local sights. Every day we visited interesting locations: The Sonoran Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon, Saguaro National Park, Karchner Caverns, Amerind Museum, Native Seeds S.E.A.R.C.H., Arizona State Museum at University of Arizona, Mission San Xavier del Bac, and downtown Tucson Persidio (all of which I would recommend). The only con was the undependable internet connection. We had a good stay and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: All room are on the first floor, and I would ask for a desert view.

My wife and I spent two nights at a Starr Pass one bedroom "casita". The reception desk was incredibly focused on delivering customer service at the highest level, making my wife and I feel welcome the "moment" we walked in the door. The room was inviting with all the conveniences of home. The view was spectacular overlooking the city of Tucson to the east. The service was stellar! In Tucson, Arizona ones rarely needs to utilize a fireplace. It just so happened that it was a rainy cold weekend and we needed a fire. I called the front desk, requesting fuel for the fireplace. A log was delivered promptly with the young man, "Michael", asking if there was anything else he could do to accommodate our needs. We found that every staff member we encountered, embraced the same level of customer service commitment. If you are looking for a great place to kick up your heels and chill out, book a room here! I repeat, book a room here!!

I will recommend this establishment to family, friends, and colleagues... Thank you

My wife and I recently spent 11 nights at Starr Pass in a one bedroom "casita." This was our second time there and just as nice as the first time. Full size kitchen, living/dining area and large bedroom have all the amenities of home. The patio with view of the mountains was great and we saw great diversity in desert plants, cactuses, and wildlife. The nightly havalina parade and the morning quail awakenings were awesome. We also saw what looked like a bobcat scoot by once, and the most beautiful Arizona cardinal we had ever seen was a routine visitor. All this really makes this place exceptional. All the nice folks add to the experience, from front desk staff, to the housekeeping cadre who are most helpful. We'll be back!

Room Tip: One bedroom suites are preferable to the standard rooms, and get one with view of the mountains and...

My wife and I stayed six nights, seven days with our two boys, 3 and 5. The property was great for us as we could get away from the city and let the boys experience the desert wildlife and natural elements from the comfort of the patio, paved roads and trails. The views were exactly what we were looking for. The pool was comfortable, even in late November. We chose this property because it was affiliated with our time share and we were very happy with the location. It's a quick drive down to I10, then to wherever you want to go, in or out of town. Our interests were in various places in the region, so we found the property to be pretty centrally located: Green Valley, Mt. Lemon, Old Tucson Studios and many places in town.
Our unit was the bedroom with king bed, living room with fireplace and full kitchen. These amenities were great, true to the local style and very comfortable. For us, the pull-out sofa bed was the perfect thing for our boys and we enjoyed the fireplace. The living room is very spacious, more so than all other time-share units we've stayed in of this type. The bedroom was also large and the king bed was very comfortable. The large bathroom gave plenty of space for more than one person to prepare for the day. The kitchen was fully equipped and we took advantage by stocking groceries for several meals.
Here are my suggestions for improvement: update the bedding/linens to today's standards. A typical Holiday Inn Express has nicer sheets (duvet-covered blanket, etc.). Consider a remodel of the bathrooms. Although we appreciated having both a tub and separate shower, they are beginning to show their age. Our shower leaked and left a puddle on the floor. The water heater started running cold after three morning showers.
The staff was great for our entire stay. The front desk was knowledgable, helpful and accommodating of our needs.
We would seek this property out again if we were to vacation in Tucson in the future.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a view of the desert, some overlook the city and many are adjacent to other units...
