“Interesting to See”

This is a working Mission so they do have services which keep in mind if you visit. One of the best and most photogenic buildings in the Southwest. Well worth seeing if you are into history.

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

This is a little off the beaten path but well worth the detour. The building is beautiful and the history of how this magnificent structure came to be built in such a remote region and how it has been preserved is awe-inspiring. It's a simple attraction but very beautiful.

“The White Dove of the Desert”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

It is the only active practicing Catholic Church of the original churches built in Miexico extending into Arizona. It was built by the Franciscan Monks beginning in the 1600s and is still very active.

The interior has been renovated by Italian craftsmen, and it isand the restoration is beautiful. Their is also a small history museum with the building of the church.

Another must see in Tucson. AZ

“A Place for Rest and Contemplation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Against the autumn blue of an Arizona sky, the mission is striking with its brilliant white exterior and 17th century architecture. Well worth a thoughtful visit allowing you to sit in the quiet of the church and take in the baroque style of decoration with dozens upon dozens of saints filling the interior in representations of icons and painted images. Be sure to check on the times for Mass as the sanctuary will be closed to tourists during those services. Take note of the detail work both within and without the mission as there are small meaningful features scattered throughout. (Look for the cat and mouse statuary outside as you enter.) Plan sufficient time to fall into the pace and rhythm of this mission, after all, its over three hundred years old, and there have been a lot of stories spoken and prayed in this space that makes the atmosphere dense and heavy. Allow yourself time to absorb the carefully place artwork. You do yourself a disservice if you engage this mission as simply a stop to check off your vacation "to do" list. You can go to the gift shop and purchse inexpensive candles to light before any of the many icons and statues. Good bathroom facilities are available on the left side of the complex as you enter. As others have noted, this is an ACTIVE church so please be respectful of the space as a place of worship and prayer for the congregants. I regret that I visited with friends who were on a time schedule that required us to move on before I got to the museum, but I found a book later in the day that allowed me to read more about the mission and its founders. I think you'll be impressed and astounded that this is located in the United States and gives evidence of a significant part of our historical culture that is rarely engaged and recognized.

“A Desert Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

This mission rises like a jewel from the desert. It is incredibly beautiful, painted inside in the colors of the desert. As an active church, it invites you to enter and rest your body, mind and soul for awhile and, if you are inclined, to pray. The parishioners I met were kind, friendly and more than willing to talk about the history of the mission and their beliefs. Visiting the mission was a welcome retreat from the usual vacation spots.
