“Caramel Latte didn't taste like much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

The barista/manager was very friendly - it seems like a really nice place. I went there wanting a flavored latte, so I ordered the caramel latte. I could barely taste the espresso.

“sorry, Sparkroot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

This is still the best coffee in Tucson. I've tried them all and this is hands down the freshest best-tasting. Also VERY nice people.

“great coffee shop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2009

I love this place. Not pretentious at all, very comfortable to sit and surf (free wi-fi). Best coffee around, not bitter! One of my favorite places to meet folks over coffee, get a little business done.

“Best Coffeehouse in Tucson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2009

First, I should point out that, if you're looking for Luce, it's actually on Park Avenue north of University in a building that's addressed to University.
There are a number of factors which make up a good coffeehouse in my mind. To me, the most important thing is the coffee. At Luce, they roast their own beans and some fantastic versions. I buy my beans here, because they're just that good.
Reliable wi-fi is another thing, and Luce has never disappointed on that level. And, if you can't get it from them, there are a couple of other open networks that you can easily reach.
Atmosphere is important and, although Luce could be a bit better, they still hold their own. The painted concrete floor, high ceilings and low number of tables may throw off some, but I've always liked it. It's very easy to walk around in there and, despite what you may think based on the high ceilings, it's not very noisy. The patio is wonderful, particularly on warm nights.
The music depends on who's working. There are some baristas who play excellent stuff and others who play stuff that I can't stand. It's just luck of the draw in that respect.
The value is definitely there. $1.50 gets you a cup of coffee which comes with one free refill. You can choose between the light or dark roast. They have fancier drinks as well, but that's what I always get: black coffee.
The location is good in the sense that it's very, very close to campus (across the street, in fact). The problem is that parking is usually an issue. When there is an event at Centennial Hall you'll have issues finding anything. On Saturday afternoons during the school year you'll likely have to park in one of the garages (they're free on the weekends). During the weekdays, before 5, you're stuck with the 2-hour meters on the streets or paying for the garage (the meters are a better deal).
The baristas really depend. There are two owners (likely married). One is particularly nice while the other always seems like they would rather be somewhere else (sorry, but it's true). The "help" usually knows what they're doing and are quick. But they're college kids, which, in the end, puts limitations on how good the service can be.
The only food available are their baked goods, which come from a local bakery. They have a "day old" pile, which is always a great deal.
A couple of notes here:
- This place used to be my own hidden gem. This is no longer the case though, and you may end up with a wait and, more likely, without a table to sit at, especially if you come at popular times.
- Don't come on Friday afternoons. There is a mosque nearby and, once things wrap up there, a large number of the attendees come over and the place gets packed.
