Have you ever wanted to pitch a tent in the medium of a highway for the night? Well, that's pretty much what staying at this hotel is like. There is a highway not more than 50 yards outside the window and I couldn't fall asleep at all. The room was fine overall, but the lack of sound-proof windows and a heating/cooling system with a fan setting to at least try to drown out the noise from the highway made this a very unpleasant stay.

Another problem is the hotel's shuttle bus. Not more than ten minutes after being told by the front desk person that it would leave at the top of the hour, I went down to wait for it only to be told by the same person that it probably wasn't going to leave until the half hour.

Providence is a great little city, with great architechture, people, and experiences... unfortunately, none of those can be found at this hotel.

“Good for a one night stay”

Radisson Hotel Providence Harbor

Dec 29, 2007

We stayed in for one night in October 2007. The directions we had required us to drive through town, which was a bit stressful given it was rush hour. We managed to take a wrong turn but did find the hotel relatively easily.
There was a shuttle bus into town but we decided to walk in, through Brown University Campus which was a nice stroll.
Breakfast in the morning was nothing to write home about.
The room was about standard for a Radisson - nothing out of the ordinary. Ours overlooked the harbour and there were some building works going on outside. These didn't disturb us but if you're looking for a room with a view then this hotel probably isn't for you at the moment. However, for one night stay on our way from New Hampshire to Cape Cod for the weekend, it did the trick for us.

Sand Springs Ok

My wife and I stayed here for one night before flying out in the morning, from our trip to Boston. The room was on the sixth floor with a nice view of the harbor to the south. There was a lot of road construction in the area, so access was a bit difficult, but that is not the fault of Radisson. There is free parking in a covered area available, also more uncovered parking. The entrance is kinda strange in that you enter on the parking level, then go up one floor to the lobby. The wireless internet had a weak signal, but usually worked ok. The sleep number bed was nice to sleep on and the room as a whole was clean and comfortable. I paid $40 through Priceline with two days advance purchase, not a bad deal for a decent room!

I just came back from a trip to Providence to visit my daughter for Parent's Day. I booked this hotel through Priceline for $80 and was really happy (since we paid much more than that last year for a B&B that was 15 miles away). However, I got a bit concerned after reading the relatively bad reviews for the hotel here. So, after a weekend stay - here's my opinion....

Good Points:
The staff was extremely friendly and courteous - always asking if everything was OK. I checked in during the morning (about 10AM) and the room was not ready yet, but they were very nice and within about 20 minutes got me a room.

The room was quite nice - plenty of space and very clean and comfortable. It had an ironing board, coffee machine, wireless internet, air conditioner that worked fine, shower head that worked great. Everything was very cosy.

The booking through priceline was very smooth - they had everything in place and there was no trouble checking in or checking out.

Location is good for visiting Brown (a nice 15-20 minute walk to campus) - all very pretty residential streets once you pass through the underpass.

24 hour shuttle to anywhere in Providence....but beware (see below)

Bad Points:
The location is right off a highway ramp that is in the middle of construction. The construction at the moment is far enough way that it is not too noisy, but there are traffic cones all over the place on the ramp making it awkward to get around into the entrance. The 2 blocks immediately surrounding the hotel are industrial and an underpass. Once you get away from those blocks everything is fine.

The walls are somewhat thin. You are right next to the highway, and you can definitely hear some highway noise, but it's not so loud that it's disturbing at all - more like a very soft muffled hum.

The Shuttle.....
Ah, here's my issue with this hotel. Although the concept is good, they should either modify it to have a fixed schedule, get more/better people to run the shuttle, get another van to have as a shuttle, or get rid of the shuttle. In short their execution of a shuttle system isn't working.

The staff was all very friendly upon check in - giving you the number to call anytime as to where you are and they will come and pick you up. The outgoing shuttle leaves every hour on the hour during the day (on request at night).

Here's my story on the three times I used the shuttle....
1) I called from my daughter's dorm room which was right next to the intersection where I wanted to be picked up. At about 11PM I called the number they gave me (which they said went right to the front desk) - 20 rings & no answer. I waited about 2 minutes and called again - another 20 rings & no answer. I waited another 2 minutes and they answered on the second ring. They took down the interesection I wanted and said the shuttle would be there in 10 minutes, and indeed the first night it was there right when they said it would be. I was a bit concerned that no one was answering at the front desk at first but.....

2) I called the next night at about midnight - they answered on the second ring and after a bit of confusion as the cell phone got disconnected and I called back they said it was on its way and should be there in just a few minutes. While I was talking to them I could hear the phone ringing twenty times in background. I rushed out the dorm room to the intersection and waited - about 20 minutes. I called back, and got a strange kind of hemming and hawing from the clerk who was very cordial but said the driver must have not been able to find the right intersection, and wouldn't be able to come back for quite a while (the hotel was only a mile from campus) and so they were sending me a cab. They gave me the name of the cab company and said it would be right there. After about another 20 minutes a car, with no markings comes by and stops near the end of the block. It's only distinguishing feature was a pine-shped car deodorizer hanging from the inside mirror. After a couple of minutes the driver pulls up to me and asks if I am going to the hotel. I said yes, but said they had asked me to right for a particular cab company - yes, she said that was her, and that she used her personal car for her taxi, and I indeed did see a meter in the car. The cab took me to the hotel, although it was quite evident that the cabbie had never taken a fare for the hotel this way before. I checked with the front desk when I got there about taking the shuttle into town (since I had my luggage) the next morning. They said to just show up 5 minutes before the time it was scheduled to leave.

3) The next morning I checked out and went down to the shuttle. The shuttle driver asked if everyone was going to Brown. 5 of us said yes, 3 others said no. He said he would take all the Brown people first. Two of the others said they had a bus to catch at the bus station and had reserved the shuttle the night before to make sure to get to the bus station on time. The driver said sorry, but he had to do the Brown trip first, but he would be back in plenty of time (after the night before I wanted to yess to the other people - Take a Cab!). On the way to campus the driver told the other three people that the intersection they asked for didn't exist (it clearly did) and told me that my intersection wasn't on the Brown campus (it was, but I let him drop me off a block away near the main archway).

In short - the hotel is fine - but if at all possible rent a car and avoid the shuttle. Otherwise you should be just fine.

“Plan to never stay here (again)”

Radisson Hotel Providence Harbor

Oct 15, 2007

My daughter and I planned a college visit to Providence. We called Brown University and were given the name of this hotel. In spite of the previous warnings on Tripadvisor we stayed there based on this recommendation. In general our stay at the property was unpleasant and substandard.

Front desk: understaffed, disorganized, chaotic, frequently had
long lines.

Rooms: Small, dark, seemed dirty, substandard. Featured "Sleepnumber" beds that neither of us liked. Our second night there the toilet overflowed at 10PM and we called the front desk to be moved to another room. They hesitated, stating the hotel was fully booked. I went to the front desk at 10:30PM in pajamas and an overcoat to get the room changed. They finally offered a room on another floor and we quickly packed and moved before they changed their minds. Near midnight another pair of guests were trying to let themselves into this new room with keys issued by the front desk!
When I informed the front desk in the morning that we had left a book in the first room when we hastily packed they said it was still empty and to go look for it since housekeeping wouldn't respond to their pages. I then discovered the room was newly occupied by late check-in guests and cannot imagine that they had time to address the plumbing issue and clean the bathroom adequately to allow someone to use the room that night. The front desk didn't know the room was occupied and had re-issued me a key to let myself in.
We decided to check out that morning.

Water Quality: The water in the toilet and sink (when filled with standing water) was brown colored. The hotel must be aware of this problem and gave each room 1-2 water bottles that we used for all drinking and toothbrushing - like camping or third world travel!

Noise: One side of the hotel is immediately adjacent to the freeway.

Dining: The "dining room" is open to the front entrance area and was a real problem. More like eating in a local coffee shop/diner with open view to the short order cooking area. I observed the cook licking his fingers in the midst of making someone's breakfast our first morning there. The wait staff is abrupt and unpleasant. The table linens were completely wrinkled in spite of being polyester, with a long blond hair on our table cloth. We ordered yogurt, fruit cup and granola (sounded safe). At least they came in the original plastic yogurt cup and mini cereal box, which were dumped in front of us, so at least we knew it was clean. We never ate there again.

This hotel is understaffed with poor management and has too many health, hygiene and security issues. We will never stay there again.
