“Always a pleasure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

My family had dinner on Christmas Eve at the Old Canteen Restaurant. It is one of our favorites places to eat because the food is reasonable priced and always excellent. Christmas Eve was not a disappointment. There were several specials available in addition to the regular menu and we ordered a varied selection of appetizers and entrees and no one was disappointed. The food was well prepared in the classic old school Italian style that the restaurant is known for and the service was excellent. I have frequented many restaurants on Providence's Federal Hill and find the quality to vary significantly from visit to visit. Not with the Old Canteen. It is always a wonderful experience and is highly recommended.

“*THIS* is classic food and service?! NOT.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

I had looked forward to dining here for some time, given the reviews I read about "old school service and food", "classic dishes", etc.

NEVER AGAIN.

Early (6:00PM) reservation for three of us. Took 15 minutes to order a drink, another 15 to get same. Forget trying to order food when drinks were delivered, for waiter was too busy to take our orders. (We had no luck getting the waiter to acknowledge us...maybe a lasso would have been more effective?). Finally, after 45 minutes, we are *blessed* with the opportunity to order. Another 20 minutes before the apps arrive.

The menu did not detail the ingredients in the "dinner antipasto". Foolish me for assuming that it might include roasted peppers, cheeses, salumeria, etc., as one might expect from an Italian restaurant on Federal Hill. MY BAD. Chopped iceberg lettuce, one slice of orange tomato, one black olive, one slice of salami. Wow, i had no idea that an antipasto could be so underwhelming. Now I know.

Main plates were ok, but by that point we were getting pretty fed up with the endless delays and being ignored. Couldn't wait to leave.

There are so many great restaurants on federal hill. Some claim to be classics. I'll never visit this classic again.

“Excellent!”

This place serves Italian food the "Old School" way! Big portions, fair prices, and an atmosphere which transports you 30-40 years back in time!

Highly recommend!

“Always Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

My wife and I had been regulars at The Old Canteen for many years, then life got in the way and we didn't go for many months, so last night we were in the area and it was a little late, but called to see if we could be seated, which they did. It was like we were never away.
The food is always fresh and fantastic and Sal and the servers are more like your friends who just happen to be making and serving great food.
Their pork chops (you get two) with vinegar peppers are better than ones I have had in Italy and the home made soups are excellent as well. They also have free valet parking on site, which is huge so you don't need to drive in circles to find somewhere to park on Federal Hill.
Overall if you are looking for a great place to eat at reasonable prices make a reservation (which they honor)and go to the Old Canteen.
