Chose this B&B on the recommendation of a friend, a Providence native who himself stayed there at the height of his home-remodeling project.
The Good:
It's extremely well-located, just blocks from Brown University, and in an easily walked neighborhood. The house is a lovely old place with all the quirky charm you'd expect from a circa-1830s house. Our room was very nice, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom clean. And the price -- $120 for a double -- was a good value.
The Bad:
Another reviewer said hostess Anna was rude. I would concur, although I don't think her behavior is intentionally rude per se; rather, she's simply a human cactus -- ultra-prickly, no soft spots. We arrived on a sweltering day, and she had some trouble activating the room's air conditioner unit. When I asked for a fan instead, all I got was a very curt: "No. No fan."
Also, other reviewers have raved about the breakfast at Cady House, but we didn't have that experience: some cereal, juice, nice fruit, breads and some muffins set out. But scrambled eggs? Homemade coffee cake? Uh, no. Also, the Cady House Web site says guests with departures earlier than the usual breakfast hours (8 - 10 am) will be accommodated. When I told Anna we had to be at the airport long before that, however, she allowed as how we might as well just eat at the airport. Only when I pressed the issue, asking if I could come downstairs and scrounge up a bowl of cereal for myself, did she relent.
As noted in other reviews, be advised that the absence of locking doors meant we were unable to secure our room from the outside. (From inside, there's a sliding latch.)
Finally, we noticed lots of street noise during our two nights -- especially motorcycles. This doesn't particularly bother me, but I offer it as an observation for those who care about the amount of ambient noise.
Would we stay here again? Probably -- but not without first comparing Cady House to other available B&Bs and nearby hotels.
