First off, I love anything with a bit of history, so I was very excited when I found out I'd be staying at the Stanley Hotel for a couple of nights. This was a business retreat, so I was able to go into most parts of the hotel (the MacGregor room for meals, the billiard and music rooms for nightly entertainment, the manor house for meetings and the performance hall down the hill). I found the place to be incredibly charming and quaint for a big hotel. The unique colors and decorating scheme were also delightful, as well as the sense of history everywhere you looked.
I did find my experience at night, however, to be extremely unsettling. The hotel creaks and groans at night and the sounds of footsteps and children giggling will wake you up if you stay on the 4th floor (there weren't any kids staying on the 4th floor or people walking around at 4 a.m.).My closet door rattled all night and the temperature constantly changed. I had a "ghostly experience" with something sitting on my bed in the middle of the night (there was nobody there). So, needless to say, while the days were delightful, the nights were extremely nerve racking and scary.
If you like history and ghosts, this is the perfect place. I like both, but found the ghostly experiences a little bit TOO frightening.
