We finally decided to go out to The Stanley Hotel to check out the hotel that inspired the book, The Shining, and do some ghost hunting. Now if you're expecting it to be set back in the remote wilderness with nothing around like the movie, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The town of Estes Park is only minutes away, and Wendy & Danny Torrance could've easily run down to the McDonalds for help. The hotel in the movie isn't The Stanley. The Stanley is a cool, old, historic hotel with lots of character. I was a little disappointed we didn't get one of those old keys hanging up at the registration desk for our room as they've updated the doors with key cards, so now those keys are just for show. And we were bummed that the ghost tour wasn't going on when we were there, but the Stanley Tour was really great. Our ghost hunting was a complete bust. No paranormal activity or any orbs/mist/etc in our photos. Maybe we'll have to stay in one of the haunted rooms next time. For those who want to stay in the haunted rooms, they're room 217 (the Stephen King room), room 401, & room 428, but be sure to call to reserve them as they're the most popular rooms in the hotel! The hotel restaurant was fairly expensive, and the menu selection wasn't that great, but since downtown Estes Park is so close by, it's not that big of a deal. My only real complaint about the hotel is our room only had barely lukewarm water. You would think with the cost of a room there that they could have hot water. I'd go again to stay in a haunted room if they got the hot water issue fixed.
