Classic hotel with good service, beautiful lobby and rooms. Nice view, excellent location, good food and good bar scene. Clean and well run. Obviously expensive, but the experience is worth it. Unique accommodations.

We stayed at the Stanley on a recent visit to hike the Rockies in Estes Park, CO. The hotel sits above the town and is an easy walk to shops and restaurants. The hotel is busy with additional visitors coming for tours of the "haunted" hotel, which can make parking and entrance to the hotel a challenge at times. The rooms are comfortable and typically sized for a historic hotel. The tour of the hotel is highly recommended, our guide was outstanding, I was hesitant to take the tour because I thought it would 'freak me out", but just the opposite occurred, the history was fascinating. The amenities on site could be expanded a bit, but adequate. Highly recommended even for just a day or two, a great place to spend the evening after a day of hiking.

This would probably be one of our once in a lifetime experiences and we were not disappointed! The rooms, the atmosphere, the staff, everything was great!!!!! Cascades restaurant the the Whiskey Bar were excellent and everyone was so friendly and tolerant of our typical tourist behavior of picture taking. Hope to go back one day, but so excited that the visit we had was so great!

I toured this hotel last weekend when I heard Stephen King had stayed here and it was his inspiration for "The Shining". They also filmed the 1997 miniseries of the book here, and the ski lodge scenes from "Dumb and Dumber". Unfortunately, due to the recent flooding in the area around Estes Park that caused road closures, the official "Shining" tours at night had been cancelled, so we took the standard hotel tour in the afternoon. It was still fun, and the hotel is a gorgeous old building with a lot of history on and off-screen. We had to have a drink at the bar where Jim Carey discovered "We've landed on the moon!", and I had the REDRUM punch, which was really good. I highly recommend stopping in here, at least for a tour, if you're in the Denver or Estes Park area. Next time I'd love to stay a night or two, if time permits. The concierge said the rooms start around $239 a night (and go up for the large, fancy rooms), but go down to about $139 a night on the off-season that starts in November. The waiting list for the infamous room 217 is about 18 months long.

Stayed at tge stanley hotel for what was supposed to be a nice weekend wedding. The stanley first started iut by over charging me for the hotel room by one hundred dollars. They said there was nothing they could do, that it would be back in my account in 5 to 7 business days. Then when we get to the room itself it was dirty the elevator button shocked me and the windows in the hotel room were cracked letting in cold air. They say things are just old. There's a difference between old and non functional. The cascades bar charged me twice. They need to get there act together. Long story short no refund at checkout and still waiting for money yo get back in my account. Horrible weekend don't stay here.... a best Western would be better.

The hotel and staff were outstanding! The hotel is beautiful and the views are amazing! The staff was friendly, professional, and fun. The whole experience was perfect and we can't wait to come back. We traveled with our 5-year old daughter and she just loved exploring the hotel and the beautiful gardens outside. The whole town of Estes is beautiful and I would recommend the town and hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful view, a chance to watch Elk graze, and maybe even see a ghost :)

We are Stephen King fans and The Shining is our fav novel by King. We knew the story behind the writing of The Shining, had seen The Stanley featured on Ghost Hunters, and being spook lovers, we decided on a July stay. As you come into the small artisan town of Estes Park, the first thing you see is The Stanley with looming mountain peaks behind it. Awesome first sight! As we drove into Estes Park we saw Elk, and I understand they do come into town. The hotel has parking around the back for check-in so you are coming into the patio area where weddings and other functions take place. We were there the weekend of a wedding and it was noisy. There is also no a/c and combined with the noise we had one night of restlessness to no sleep. However, that was the only negative. Back to check-in -- the front desk is exactly like the TV movie The Shining, and the entire lobby is as it was in the film. We were told the movie people had painted the pillars and such and the owners liked it so much they kept the look, so it is like walking into the movie itself. The bar area is not much like the Kubrick movie, but close enough (as the movie version was not filmed there at all). We dined the entire time at the hotel and the food was good, but our mind was more on the sights and the hotel itself. The gateway to the Rocky Mountains is just down the road a-piece so there is that to see and it is an awesome experience. However, the hotel in itself was fun and unexplainable things did happen. We could not get room 217 (THE room) but had another on the third floor. We had gone up to the haunted 4th floor at dinnertime when most everyone was downstairs or out, and that is when our first experience happened. We did hear the laughter of children and there were none. We looked all around for them, and it was hard to pinpoint where the laughter was coming from. At once it was all around us, at others drifting towards the stairs, but no one was there. We did take the Ghost Tour of the Hotel at twilight the next day (it runs all day). We were taken to the bowels of the hotel and all round where we were regaled with ghost stories, and of King's stay and subsequent writing of The Shining. The tour was informative and a lot of fun. The Stanley Steamer in the lobby has its own un-ghostly history and tie-in to the hotel and is an unexpected attraction when you first walk in. Flora's piano and King's stage are also interesting to check out. We had ghostly goings on in our room where I had put my reading glasses on the table to check out the hotel's non-stop running of The Shining on their station, and as I went to put them back on they were gone. We found them on the other side of the room. How they got there we don't know, but we looked high and low for them. Maybe we were primed for ghostly goings on, I don't know, it seemed things happened in broad daylight and nothing at night. The accommodations were lovely, the rooms vary according to size along with prices. There is the lodge if you can't get bookings for the hotel itself, and that too is said to be more haunted than the hotel. Do note there are small art-type shops that fill Estes Park, and they are worth stepping into. There are restaurants and ice cream places all through the town and the river runs through it making for a picturesque setting, so don't forget your camera. It is an expensive town and the hotel was not cheap, but we felt it was worth the expense.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the patio in the back can be noisy. If no special functions, patrons do take their drin...
