We celebrated our 20th anniversay with a trip to the Stanley. The History and Ghost tour was entertaining and informative. The restaurant served excellent meals. Our room was showing its age but was nevertheless very enjoyable. The hotel is within walking distance of downtown.

Room Tip: Avoid the 4th floor is you are staying during hot weather.

I cannot recommend the Stanley Hotel highly enough. We arrived at 12:30 and check in wasn't until 4:00. However, we asked and the room was ready and they let us check in! We stayed in haunted room 401 and were looking forward to our ghostly adventures. We had a family of five, 2 adults and 21, 18, and 15 year old kids. Dad slept on an air mattress and the rest of us fit in the bed. However, the kids weren't there long as they were ghost hunting all night. The hotel is beautiful, the service excellent, and the scenery was beautiful. We had appetizers in the bar in the evening, and a wonderful breakfast the next morning by the outdoor waterfall in the back. Our ghost tour was so much fun, and tours stopped by our room about every 15 minutes, which the kids got a kick out of. We did have a couple ghostly things happen and a lady freak out in our room when she asked if she could see it. Heard sounds at night from under the bed...the closet door did not open and shut as was reported, though. The Shining runs continually on a loop so it's fun to watch it as you are staying in the hotel that inspired it. Would recommend it to everyone that wants a very relaxing, old time charm feel. Sitting on the porch and looking at the mountains was fabulous.... and don't forget to fill out the sheet in the lobby that says to report any unusual happenings at the hotel....... FUN, GREAT, STAY HERE!

Room Tip: Try one of the haunted rooms for a fun time. 217, 401, 407....1302

Perfectly situated with good views to the mountains in Rocky Mountains National Park. The Stanley is an icon for Estes Park. The interior is old and classical - you enter "past history" when entering the hotel.
The rooms are without aircon - but with a fan and open windows it is OK.
In the Lodge - an annex building few meters from the main building you have your included breakfast in the Manor room - very special "non-hotel" style - and with a very friendly server.
The buffet breakfast is continental . but much, much better than you would think of: fresh cút fruits and delicious pastry - a perfect breakfast it was to us!!
There is a pool in front of the main building with stunning views, too.
Free parking.
WiFi? - Yes, all over and FREE (as it should be on good hotels in the year of 2012).
We can highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Stanley Hotel with friends for one night. We really wanted to stay for the experience, having heard so much about the history of the hotel. We were very busy and our time was limited so we didn't have a lot of time for the hotel. This worked out well for us, as it was very hot and our rooms were stifling on the 4th floor. We knew in advance that there was no air conditioning and that the pool was closed, so we didn't expect either one.

The Stanley is a beautiful hotel, and rich in history. We took the ghost tour, which was very informative and interesting. We had rooms at the end of the hall so the tours didn't bother us, and we had expected them going in, again it was part of the experience.

There were a few drawbacks. Though the lobby is open, the other areas off of the lobby are cordoned off and only accessible to those on tours. This is a shame, as it detracts from the beauty of the hotel and does not give many options for spreading out in common areas. The hotel very much resembles the Mt. Washington Hotel in New Hampshire (on a smaller scale) except that all areas of the Mt. Washington are open and there are many more places to sit with a book and relax.

Our room had two windows and cooled down nicely at night, but our friends were in the other hallway with just one window without a screen. There room was very hot and stuffy all night, and they woke up to a raccoon sitting in their chair eating ice from their ice bucket, as there was not a screen on their window. Needless to say they did not sleep well after having to shut the window. I would also think this could be a health concern, and apparently the Stanley is aware that raccoons come in through the open windows. (After returning we researched online and found that the ghost hunters had also encountered them).

It is an old hotel so of course the rooms are old looking, not well insulated from noise, and not fancy, but that is to be expected when you stay at a turn of the century hotel. I was glad to have stayed there once, not sure I'd stay again, but it was fine for a short stay.

Room Tip: The lower floors are cooler. Check your window to make sure you have a screen in it. There are no...

We spent two nights enjoying the Hotel, the Cascade Restaurant, the Architectural Tour and walking around the newly planted gardens. We loved the mattress, pillows and bedding so much, we just didn't want to get out of bed. Of course we did to hike some great trails in Rocky Mountain National Park.

For dinner at the Cascade Restaurant we started with best Crab Cakes we've ever had. We were hopeful the entrees would be equally yummy. I thoroughly enjoyed the Atlantic Salmon and my husband said his Alomba Striped Bass was the best meal he'd eaten in a very long time.

Room Tip: They do not have AC so try to choose a room with an East/North Facing window.

Worth touring, not worth staying a night. No A/C (which in the summer is a big must) and WAY overpriced compared to other local options. We were given a deluxe queen room, and the quality was on par with a Motel 6 at best. The room had no amenities, wallpaper peeling, and was very outdated (I don't mean old fashioned/antique). I expected a lot more from the Stanley considering their lobby is so grandiose! Furthemore, the ghost tours up and down the hallways were loud as the walls provided no noise barrier.

The only saving grace was the front desk was efficient and courteous when we asked for a refund and told them we were moving to another hotel. Great employees, terrible hotel. Save your $$ and stay elsewhere.

The Stanley is a beautiful, historic property that anyone visiting Estes Park should see. That being said, it is also not going to have the amenities that a room in that price range would command. The reason that it is so expensive it solely based on its reputation of being the Shining Hotel and because it can. There is no air conditioning, which I completely understand, but if you are there on a hot day, it will be uncomfortable. We were there on an unseasonably hot night and we were fairly miserable. We had a standard room and the beds were very comfortable but the bathroom was lacking. Again, I understand why; it is extremely hard to retrofit a property to the modern conveniences while still maintaining its historical and authentic feel. We also did the Ghost tour and while we never saw any ghosts or felt any sort of disturbance, it was entertaining and worth and hour and half of your time, even if only to learn about the history of the place. The kids also got a huge kick out of the constant 24 hour loop of The Shining on the TV. All in all, a beautiful place to visit once.
