In February, we watched the sunrise from our deck, turning the high peaks rose pink, then gold. The bright sun made morning snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park comfortable, the views spectacular, although occasional powerful winds made some of the exposed areas challenging. The snow was 4’ deep above Bear Lake, but the trails were packed and easy. We would return to Wildwood in the afternoon to relax tired muscles in our hot tub, still marveling at the view. Two herds of elk grazed on the lawns below us. A coyote trotted down Bear Lake Road. Mule dear watched us pass by on the Two Owls trail. Something cat-like (a lynx?) slinked down the bank to the river at dusk.
The town of Estes Park is more relaxed in winter, the merchants very happy to chat and give advice, the restaurants quick to seat and to serve. After dinner, we would return to Wildwood to sit in the hot tub in snow showers, waiting for the sky to open to a sea of stars, the clearest and blackest sky imaginable.
Wildwood itself was, as always, perfect. The heat was even and comfortable, aided by the gas fireplace. The small microwave and refrigerator kitchen was just right for our needs. The beds were new and snuggly with down mattress pads. On the one occasion that we needed maintenance, a staff member showed up in under a minute (a switch had flipped on the hot tub). The office staff was friendly, very helpful with suggestions for restaurants and wildlife viewing.
No question, we’ll be back.
