We spent 5 days at Aspen Winds over the week of the 4th of July. First, the place was very clean, an important factor to one of us. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The place itself is beautiful and only a mile from the Fall River entrance to the Park. It's 3 or 4 miles from town, which means it is away from the bustle and noise of Estes Park. The view from the back porch is very restful. The other side of the valley rises steeply and catches the light, the river runs through the back yard, and greenery along the stream bank screens the road. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the river run through and the occasional deer who stopped by. The bed was very comfortable, and we slept very well.
They provide a toaster, electric skillet, coffee pot and a little refrigerator. This allowed us to cook breakfasts, which was very useful so that we could get an early start on our hikes. We generally were gone by 7 am, which worked out well because we avoided the crowds and the heat of the day, leaving the afternoons for shopping, resting, watching a movie or or just goofing off. Given that we had thundershowers every afternoon, an early start avoided those, too.
Any glitches were very minor. Apparently the owners were breaking in a new cleaning crew and "towels on the floor" was taken literally. Placing used towels in the tub did not get them replaced. No problem! A call to the office was all that was needed. Then, lightning knocked out the wireless router, so there was no Netflix for a couple of days. Oh, well, who wants TV in the presence of this beauty? We never missed it. If we return to Estes Park, we will likely stay there again. One thing to consider is that the ground level units lack cross-ventilation, but the temperature was never warm enough to be uncomfortable. We enjoyed our jacuzzi room. The tub felt mighty good on these flatlanders' muscles after a 6 mile hike up and down mountains.
We highly recommend Smokin' Dave's BBQ restaurant as a place to eat. I am a conoisseur of BBQ, and this place rates up there. We also enjoyed the bison burger's at Penelope's. Great for takeout and enjoying back at Aspen Winds.
