“Dirty Dirty Dirty”

Loveland Heights Cottages

Sep 6, 2007

We rented several cabins for a family vacation the summer. The cabins were filthy and in disrepair and it was the dirtiest place I have ever paid to stay. The bathroom drains backed up (with sewage), the bathroom sink was falling off the wall, the pilot lights kept going out in the heater and the stove spewing propane into the air, and the cable only worked in the first cabin closest to the office. The shower stalls were rusting, had paint peeling off, and was missing a drain cover. The floors slope and the foundations are crumbling. There is NO housekeeping, contrary to what they advertise or say to you. You have to take out your own garbage, ask for towels and garage bags (that they ask you to share). They advertise a full kitchen but do not provide microwaves, they advertise full baths but do not have bathtubs. We were told at 9:30pm at night to be quiet because their kids were trying to sleep, when my 1 year old was sleeping soundly in the next room. Then after scolding us, they kept their front door open for an hour to listen. They started asking for our money for the entire stay as soon as we got there. They were hillbillies that ran the place and I wondered when the chainsaws were going to come out, reminded me of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family. I asked for a vacuum (since there was no housekeeping) and they had to go through 3 of them before the found one that sucked more dirt than it threw out. The only good thing is that you are right on the river, however in this area in Estes, it is catch and release.

We decided at the last minute to make a trip out to Colorado and began calling around to find a place to stay only 4 days before we checked in. Loveland Heights had just had a cancellation and the price was right so we went for it. We're pretty easy going and we figure even a bad trip makes a good story. Loveland Heights was surprisingly charming. Our cabin (#9) Was right on the Big Thompson River. It had two bedrooms and a fold-out couch so we had plenty of room for the 4 of us. There was a kitchen with full size stove (new) and fridge and had all the utensils we would need. We cooked all our meals but one there and saved a bunch of money. Estes Park surely has gotten much more expensive (relatively speaking) than last time we were there 10 years or so ago. There is no maid service but the owners cheerfully exchanged towels or bedding if you came up to the office. This is a "mom and pop" operation and they don't seem to be into putting on fancy airs so what you see is what you get. The kids had a ball fishing right in back and our deck had a grill and a picnic table on the deck overlooking the beautiful Big Thompson. I think the pictures on the website are pretty accurate. The cabins are rustic. They aren't level and are a little rundown. We still laugh when we talk about my husband fitting in the teeny shower cubicle. But we had a great time and enjoyed our time at Loveland Heights.

“This IS the Rocky Mountains!!!!!”

This IS the Rocky Mountains!!! I wish I were there now!! I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants to experience the Rockies. Our cabin had a deck that extended out over the Big Thompson which is purely a fisherman's delight. We stayed in the old cabin that was built in the 1800's (of course it is old-so don't expect luxury) and spent most of our time on the deck fishing. We cooked our own meals in the kitchen and the only thing I would recommend is adding a microwave. The owners/caretakers were very friendly and accommodating. You won't want to stay here if you are the "prissy" type, but if you want a place that is safe, homey and offers a taste of the wilderness, this is the place. The prices are so reasonable and I cannot wait to return there.

We stayed at the Loveland Heights Cottages this summer in the 3 bedroom cabin. The beds were terribly uncomfortable and VERY OLD. The office was FILTHY. Not just cluttered but gross dirty. The managers were equally as unkept. Contrary to their sign and what the advertise on their site there is NO housekeeping UNTIL you LEAVE. They do not replace towels, take out the garbage or clean during your stay. I woulndt return even if they gave us a week stay for free it was THAT BAD.

My family and I stayed at Loveland Heights Cottages during our summer vacation to Estes Park. Upon arriving the fist thing we noticed was how run down the place was. The cabins needed some very basic repairs, a decent coat of paint, anything just to make them seem a little more appealing. The owner greeted us and showed us to our cabin, and he was walking around barefoot! We weren't expecting a concerige, but how hard is it to put on a pair of shoes?! The inside of the cabin was fairly clean, although the bathroom was disgusting. There was mold growing along the base of the shower, paint peeling, pretty gross. The location, right on Lake Thompson, was definitely the high point. They provided BBQ grills so we spent one evening grilling burgers and listening to the water. All in all you basically get what you pay for. Loveland Heights is definitely affordable, but don't expect much.
