“Best place for live music and great food in Estes.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2007

The Rock Inn Mountain Tavern, formerly the Old Rock Inn Steakhouse, is fantastic. Based on the outside of the restaurant I expected a standard American menu, burgers, fries, etc. I was pleasantly surprised that the menu was very original. The appetizer list is one of a kind. I highly recommend the "Devil’s on Horseback," garlic stuffed, bacon wrapped, dates. Sounded crazy to me also but they were excellent. Don’t be scared, you can still get a burger if you want. They offer everything from pizza to filet mignon. If your tired of all your meals tasting the same stop here.

Keep in mind they also have live music on some nights. Besides having good local musicians they get national acts as well. On one of the nights I was there I saw Big Smith, a national act with a blue grass feel. What a perfect place for that show. Everyone was dancing and having a good time it was like a scene out of a movie.

“Great Food and Music at the Rock Inn Mountain Tavern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2007

What a great meal we found at the Rock Inn Mountain Tavern (the name has changed), when we really just expected simple, down-home food while listening to some live music. It looks like an old country bar but it’s actually new venue that was renovated and reopened last May. Their chefs are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, quite unexpected from the looks of the place. We thoroughly enjoyed our appetizer and entrees. We split some stuffed mushrooms that were fantastic, along with warm focaccia bread and nice house salads. My entrée was excellent; chicken breast with apple stuffing, topped with a gorgonzola sauce, over garlic mashed potatoes and steamed winter vegetables. My husband enjoyed an enormous grilled pork chop, done to perfection, with “Long’s Peak” potatoes (red potatoes steamed, then smashed and lightly fried). I never pass up a crème brulee, which was a perfect ending. The wine list was brief, but the wine by the glass offerings were fine. The prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food; $20s for steak items, less for the chicken, fish and pasta dishes.

The Inn is a large, open room with a typical log home décor. A big iron pot-bellied stove near the bar was welcome on a cold night and the bar was full of friendly patrons. A singer with a guitar was playing folk standards, and was later joined by a banjo, bass fiddle and mandolin for some excellent bluegrass jams. Service was very homey and our waitress was efficient and friendly. We later chatted with the owner, Bruce, who told us the story of how they got started and how the music is the centerpiece of the Inn in the summertime. They have a large and popular outdoor patio, jammed to the rafters in the nice weather. They attract some fairly big name groups and clear out the restaurant for dancing in the late evenings in the summer.

We were very impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. Highly recommended for eating or music – or both – any time of the year! [---]

“A surprisingly great restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2006

We drove all over Estes Park looking for a steakhouse that was reasonably priced. After an hour of searching we gave up and headed back toward our lodging at the YMCA. Along the way we drove past a bar that we figured had a grill where we could get burgers. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and found a wonderful restaurant! The menu included steak dinners for under $20 in addition to some fancier entrees. All meals came with an upscale presentation and the food was great! The decor was that of a rustic lodge - very fitting for the location. There was even live entertainment from a bluegrass band. This is truly a hidden gem among the local eateries!
