Camped at morraine park, Hiked this trail from the head ( 2.3 miles ) my GPS said it was more like 2.6 , anyway the first part of the hike was a breeze. The last part was steep and very tiring ( however, i am a overweight beginner ) went with hubby and two kiddos. It was interesting to see so much of the " fern lake " burn area from this trail. It was still beautiful and we got to see a herd of Elk ( Bulls bugle too ) from yards away. The trail will be closed as of Sept 1 ( in 2 days ) for elk mating season. Once we got to the lake, we sat on a large rock to have water and a snack, the ducks and chipmunks were VERY friendly and wanted to join us, but as good hikers of course we did not share our food. We saw what we think was a weasel at the lake as well. Experienced hikers there told us moose frequent the area but we were not that lucky. The way back was much easier than the way up. Beautiful all around, the night before our hike we sat at a ranger talk about the fern lake fire, so we had a lot of knowledge to go with our experience of the burn area. Amazing how quickly all has grown back. We used the burn area to teach the kids about fire. I would do it again, but slower and further next time! :)
