This trail is 2.3 miles one way. It's fairly easy with little elevation gain (~500ft). It goes through the area burned out by the fire of 2012. We went in early May and a few spots of the trail were still covered in snow, but it was packed down and well traveled so no problems.
Rather than turn around and just hike back the way you came, there are some interesting add-ons to the trail. You can go less than a mile to The Pools and pick up the Fern Lake trailhead. Here you have a choice. You can head back to the Fern Lake trailhead, a nice easy 1.8 mile walk (we saw business men in suits and dress shoes walking it - not recommended, but just gives you an idea of the difficulty). Once you finish, it's just about a mile walk down a dirt road to find your car at the Cub Lake Trail head.
Or if you are up for a challenge, continue up to Fern lake. It's 2 miles up. We didn't make it because there was a foot of fresh snow about a mile up that wasn't packed and there was a storm blowing in. Saving it for another day once the snow melts.
