An incredibly beautiful and leisurely drive through extraordinary Rocky Mountain country, this road between Estes Park and Central City/Blackhawk is particularly stunning in late September when the Fall colors are peaking. It takes you through quaint Allenspark (business route), where you must stop for a drink from Crystal Springs, and food at the Fawnbrook Inn (evenings) or the Mountain Meadow Cafe (which has been operating since the early 1950s). From there, head south toward Peaceful Valley, Ward and Nederland(where the frozen dead man used to reside) and continue south to Central City, the world-famous gold mining town turned gambling mecca. Stop at the Sundance Cafe for a legendary home cooked meal. There are dozens of side trips to such places as Brenard Lake at the foot of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. It is a round trip that will take about 4-6 hours out of Estes Park, and well worth it.
