“Our very favorite place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Of all of the places we have stayed (b&bs and non-b&bs) in all of the places we have traveled to, Thumbelina's Cottage at Barbara's B&B is our very favorite...for these reasons:

Location: I could not imagine a more perfect location. It is a 10-minute walk to downtown Estes Park, but is so secluded. It feels like you are miles away from civilization, yet you are so close. It is a bit of a climb up the hill to get to Barbara's, but it's not bad. My wife and I look for very different things - while I like to be close to restaurants and entertainment, she always prefers to be secluded. This is really the perfect compromise.

Amenities: Barbara has thought of everything. The mini-fridge is always fully stocked with alcohol and other beverages. Our first visit was over our first anniversary weekend, and we were thrilled to find champagne (and flutes!). There are also snacks to take on hikes, as well as a keurig with pretty much every kind of pod you could want. The cottage is so incredibly cozy, thanks to the beautiful rugs, king-sized bed with an electric blanket, and very powerful heater. During our second visit, there was snow on the ground and it was rather chilly. It was great to come home after a day of hiking and shopping outside to a warm cottage! The best part is the hot tub - it is shared, but is right outside of Thumbelina's Cottage. It's very secluded, but is a great place for wildlife watching. The views from the hot tub are incredible. Again - a great compromise for my wife, who loves wildlife, and me (I LOVE hot tubbing).

Breakfast: Words cannot even begin to express how incredible Barbara's breakfasts are! She cooks an insane amount of food, and it is all so delicious. Barbara makes great blueberry pancakes, omelets, casserole, smoothies...and so many other things. We generally don't even have room for lunch after Barbara's breakfasts. My wife enjoys bird watching over breakfast - there are windows and wonderful views on all sides of the dining room. And Barbara knows so much about all of the birds that visit her deck.

Wildlife: I have already addressed this in the other sections, but this is a great place to see wildlife. There are deer, bunnies, and birds all over, and although we haven't seen any yet, we have heard many stories about bears and mountain lions visiting Barbara's.

Hostess: I saved the best for last! Barbara is such a wonderful, selfless hostess. She provides more than we ever can even imagine wanting - from the huge breakfasts to the personal touches all over the room, we are always more well taken care of than we expect to be. Our first visit, I was studying for the bar. We scheduled our second visit over the weekend that ended up being the weekend of the flood. Barbara called me to touch base and see if we wanted to reschedule. Before I could even ask her how she was holding up and how much damage she had sustained, she told me that she was dying to know how the bar went and told me she had been thinking about me. I couldn't believe how sweet and selfless she was - and how kind she was after only meeting us once.

We can't imagine staying anywhere else in Estes! I just wish that Barbara had a B&B in all of the places we travel - we would always stay with her.

Room Tip: Thumbelina's Cottage is the only one we have stayed in and we LOVE it!

We stayed at the Clatworthy Cottage September 6-10, 2013. We had a great time! Barbara is so sweet and accomodating. We loved the cottage and all of the original owner's artwork was amazing. We also enjoyed climbing up the hill above the cottage and seeing a beautiful view of Estes Park at sunrise and sunset. We also enjoyed seeing all the critters...bunnies, ground squirrels, chipmunks and birds. There is also a bear but we never saw him. We joined Barbara for breakfast a couple of days even though it's really not part of the stay at the Clatworthy Cottage. For a small charge she made breakfast for us and it was delicious and lots of it!!!

I found Barbara's B&B on an Internet hotel search, as we were attending a wedding in Estes Park. This is a charming mountain hideaway with all the amenities. My wife and 5 adult kids took up a room and 2 of her separate "cottages". Keurig coffee makers, refrigerators, all the electronics and you're hidden in a mountain cabin. You can walk to the aerial tram and downtown, yet the location is located on a quiet residential road. Barbara's breakfasts were the BEST, with fresh everything and variety. Loved it and highly recommend it...price was excellent also.

Barbara is one of a kind. Her bed and breakfast is what every owner should aspire to be.Beautiful furnishings, clean, welcoming.
We stayed in Thumbelina's Cottage over the 4th of July for 3 nights and hated to leave. Perfect location, we could easily walk to the shops and restaurants. Close the the Park Entrance as well. All this means nothing with out Barbara's hospitality. We felt like we were staying with our favorite Aunt. Breakfast was to die for and I will warn you, be prepared to be STUFFED because there is no walking away from that table otherwise. Everything she made was WONDERFUL and there was such variety, served on fine china!!! My daughter is perhaps the pickiest eater in the world, and even she loved it! Barbara is some sort of Bed and Breakfast ninja because every time we came back (even after being gone for just an hour) our room was cleaned, fresh towels, and even turn down service.
Long story short, we come to Estes Park often and have stayed at different locations every time. We have finally found OUR place!

We booked five nights and cut it down to three and regretted it. We went to Red Rocks towards the end of our trip and stayed in Boulder but wished we stayed the extra two nights. Barbara is a wonderful host. She is very accommodating and a tremendous cook!

We stayed in Thumbalina's Cottage which is a small one room cottage with a separate bath and a hot tub just outside. It's about a 5 minute walk to downtown Estes Park and maybe a 15-20 drive to the main entrance for RMNP Bear Lake Road.

The breakfasts were amazing and we had plenty to work off during our daily hikes!

Can't wait to go back to RMNP and we plan on staying at Barbara's B&B!

Room Tip: Very quiet area but keep an open mind on the small space in Thumbalina's Cottage (but why else w...

We had a wonderful stay for two nights in Thumbelina's Cottage. It was small, but Barbara has done a great job of using the space. We had a coffee maker, a nice television, nice small bathroom, separate "kitchen" sink & frig, a closet and plenty of room to put our things. Certainly 100% better than staying in a hotel. Everything was very homey, clean and comfortable. The breakfasts, in the main house, were fantastic...... so much food! Great home cooking and we met fun and interesting people around the table. There was ample parking, great location off the main road, lots of wildlife & birds, we felt at home as soon as we arrived. We spent the days in Rocky Mt. National Park, and then came back to Barbara's in the evening for a shower, cozy bed, and looked forward to breakfast in the morning! Highly recommend staying here.

My wife and I stayed a week at Barbara's and felt like family. The B&B is just a few blocks from town but up a hill and is quiet, peaceful, with plenty of birds and chipmunks. I even saw an elk walking down the street. Breakfast is a real treat (hint ask Barbara if she can make you some blueberry pancakes :) and dine looking out over snow covered mountains. The Rocky Mtn National Park is just a short drive with world class hiking trails and more. Easy walk to town for night life, etc, and a very reasonable price.
