“Excellent place to stay and enjoy the ocean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2011

What a great find! I struggled to find a reasonably priced accommodation that would be close to the ocean. Well, this hotel almost sits on the ocean. The room had an amazing view of the water and offered a great sight of the sunset. The room was clean, the pool comfortable (sure, the water could have been a bit warmer but no big deal), and the experience serene. We enjoyed the hot tub, walks along the ocean, and admired the scenery. Because we were there in Dec, the price was very reasonable and few other people came into our view. Peace and quiet - exactly what we were looking for.

This is another hotel from my West Coast trip of which I have mixed feelings. First of all -- the view is phenomenal! Stunning! It is right on the ocean with a dramatic view of a lighthouse on a cliff. I have never been able to afford to stay in an oceanfront room anywhere. The price was inexpensive for what they termed the best view they had -- $149. The hotel was somewhat shabby -- the pics on the website evidence the dangerous open balcony railing in you have young kids with you. The door to the balcony didn't lock and the balconies were very close together leaving me a little concerned about safety. The room was shabby as was the town overall. I was able to overlook all of these issues because the view was breaktaking. Breakfast was decent -- offering a lot of choices.

We ventured into the hotel and asked about the prices on our way to the famous Battery Point Lighthouse. A female frontdesk clerk was friendly and told us that the room rates had dropped from $239 in the summer to $139 in current slow season. We asked to see the rooms. The clerk gave us two rooms to look at-one on the first floor without balcony and the other on the second floor with a balcony on the oceanfront. Both rooms were very spacious and clean. The room on the second floor with a balcony provides a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and beautiful lighthouse. The ocean view made us to decide to stay at this hotel. The next day morning we found the breakfast better than you can get in most restaurants. There were at least ten food items and three fruits for us to choose from. This was beyond our expectations. The hotel had a beautiful pool, sauna and excercise room. But we did not use them. We love this hotel and will certainly return.

Room Tip: rooms on the second or third floor with balcony provides beautiful view of the Ocean

Julie C. wrote a review comparing this to when it was a Hampton's Inn. Here is a concurring view.

We have stayed at Hampton Inns at other cities and this was chosen by us because AAA listed it as a Hampton Inn property. The cosmetic appearance of the room and bed were not up to the standard we are used to at Hampton Inn properties. The towels were well worn, thin, from having been washed and dried too many times. For the cost of this room at this city, the towels should not have been in this condition. We have stayed in much less expensive properties that had better towels. We felt the price, compared to other properties in the area, was a bit high (we paid $139 for a King Bed room with a balcony on the 2nd floor overlooking the lighthouse and the beach). It is, however, a location that the other properties can't match, at least not the other hotels we considered. You can walk out of the hotel and onto a paved walk along the beach, and you can walk to the lighthouse and the park beach area. So weigh your priorities when you choose lodging in Crescent City.

The people working the front desk were VERY helpful. Gave us help finding Redwood Forest locations, marked maps, and gave us restaurant recommendations. They get an A+. The girl working the breakfast room was wearing headphones and was listening to music so she could not hear when people asked for help. She gets a C.

Breakfast is the usual stuff you find at other competitors. Personally, I would prefer to pay less and eat out for breakfast because I love to try the local restaurants for food and write a review. We did eat at a couple of restaurants and I will provide a review of both elsewhere. They were the Chart Room and the Good Harvest Cafe. I would recommend the Good Harvest Cafe for any meal. As for the Chart Room, just look for my review. Depends on what you are looking for. They specialize in seafood, but they mostly are good at fried versions (the Seafood Linguine was good, though).

We stayed in Crescent City to visit the Redwood forests. We did not spend much time in our room. So next time we stay we are going to try the Curly Redwood Lodge. I read the reviews and we went there and took a look at a room when we were leaving town. Nice rooms in a late 50's/1960's decor that I just love. No breakfast or coffee in the rooms, but we really don't need those perks (no pun intended).

Room Tip: Ask for upper floor overlooking beach and lighthouse with a balcony.

It was a perfect location -- a breathtaking view of the ocean and the conference took place on the facilities. You felt isolated from everything, which I liked.

The room was clean, but just typical. Amenities were there and I felt very safe.

Room was small, however (incl. the conference area, which was tight).

It was nice. Perhaps I'll return.

The hotel when a Hampton property was well kept. Now the amenities are the lowest quality and the worst I've seen in 5 years not to mention the filthy carpets in the rooms, stairwells, etc. It went from being a great property to a trashy hotel with a great view. So disappointed as it has definetely gone from a 5 to a 2 at best.
