“Best Accessible Snorkeling on the Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2014 NEW

2 Step ( locally labelled snorkeling site for Honaunau Bay ) is the best accessible location on the Big Island for snorkeling when the seas are calm. I've snorkeled here dozen of times and I would highly recommend this for a great snorkeling experience.
Fairly easy access off of the 2 steps of lava into the bay. The water is exceptionally clear on calm days. I have seen turtles , eels, rays, and loads of different fish. Best snorkeling is up the reefs of both sides of the bay. Great outside of the bay on calm days.
Spinner dolphins regularly make appearance in the bay and seem to be comfortable swimming with people.
Surprisingly, I've never see any sharks here in all of the times snorkeling 2 Step. I'm sure they are around ( they inhabit all waters around the islands), i just have never seen them here.
Access can be challenging on rough days with the real challenge being the exit on high swell, choppy days
Be mindful of the small sea urchins living in the cavities on the 2 steps as you enter and exit the bay. Those spines in fingers or toes can ruin your day.
Enjoy!

“Amazing snorkeling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2014

Several people in our group had been to Captain Cook on a previous visit and this place is just as spectacular and much easier to get to. There is lots of free parking nearby and when that fills up parking at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park for just $5. The entry into the water is easy, just watch the locals to see the best spot. We found plenty of people here who were very friendly and willing to point us in the direction of the best sites and the easiest entry. Be sure to see the underwater "Aloha" for a great photo-op. Before or after snorkeling, be sure to stop by Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park which is just a short walk away (and you probably parked here anyway) for a beautiful park and some history of the area.

“Exquisite snorkeling at Two Step”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2014

Believe the hype! This place will change your view of the world if you just open your eyes. Better entry to the north especially at high tide. December seas not as choppy as expected. Beautiful turtles and yellow tang!

“Another USA National Park at it's Finest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2014

Besides the famous Two Step snorkeling outside the park itself. The Park has a totally amazing historical past and amazing different flows to explore in great abundance. Walking grounds are easily accessible, picnic area available, sun, sand, shade, Fantabulous Sunsets, oh yeah.. Great Snorkeling within easy walking distance. Gotta Love Living in Hawaii!!

“some of the best snorkeling on the big island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2014

A perennial favorite for us. Park in the lot - $5 - or at the national park up the street, if you have a pass already or visit the Place of Refuge. It's a short walk with your gear to the entry point. Leave towel and footwear on the lava, then enter through the 2-step - it's deep, so get your gear on quick and jump right in! Lots of coral, incredible colored fishes everywhere - you can head north along the lava flow which is less crowded but can be a little surge-y, or head out to see for the deeper reefs - just watch for crowds of snorkelers from the tour boats. If you head toward the place of refuge, sometimes you can spy turtles near the rocks, scraping algae. Very cool, but don't touch them or get in their way - they're protected.
