“Great historic sight with snorkeling near by”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

We visited on the national free park day. It was nice exploring the area and spending time learning the history. We noticed that a popular snorkeling spot next to the park and enjoyed that as well. Inside the park, there really aren't opportunities to cool down or relax in the shade, so be prepared for the heat by bringing water and wearing sunscreen. We hiked out on the rock to see the ocean, but be careful. The current changed quickly while we were out there. There was what looked like a swimming spot in the rocks (tempting when its extremely hot) but the current completing washed over the area right in front of us.

“Very Rushed Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

This was the last stop on my tour in Kona and on the way here it started pouring rain, now I know I was warned of rain in Hawaii when we planned the trip, but this was a downpour and it made it really hard to enjoy the spot. Our tour guide told us about the place before we arrived and I thought it sounded like a great place to visit. When we got there it's huge, so much to see and we only had 30 mins, seriously not enough time, I felt very rushed through things and don't think I got to see everything there was to see, but what I did see was cool and I would probably go back sometime in the future, when I have more time and when it's not pouring and I can see everything.

“You can just feel the history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

as you walk these grounds where the Hawaiian Ali'i came to relax. It is an easy, flat 1/2 mile walk to tour the entire grounds. an amazing construction is the great wall, 10 feet high and 17 feet thick built around 1550 without any mortar. This site is a treasure and a must see for anyone in touch with the Hawaiian culture.

“Perfect Day Excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Not only is this an amazing view of Historic Hawaii but it is also right next to a superb Snorkelling location. This allows for a two for one deal that makes a great day outing close to Kona.
They charge $6 for a vehicle but if you plan it right you can park at the beach and walk in, its just a short 5min walk between the two sites. The snorkelling is outstanding and the park is easy to navigate with either a self guided or ranger led tour.

“Check out historical Hawaii”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

For a minimal entry fee of $6 per vehicle you can tour this National Park, either a self-guided tour or wait for one of the ranger lectures and learn more about the "Place of Refuge." The park brochure provides a good overview of the attractions, the historical items are numbered and labeled so you clearly know what you're viewing. I found the entire park very interesting, full of details on ancient Hawaiian culture, including how commoners were to interact/react when royalty was present. It was quite warm the day we visited and the black lava rock heats up quickly. The park does have a water fountain and restrooms.
