“Fine for convention hotel but not extraordinary”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

With its location right next to the convention center downtown, this hotel is perfect if you are there for a convention or other business downtown. However, the downtown area was eerily deserted even on weekdays, even at "rush hour" let alone later at night. I didn't feel unsafe necessarily, though the fact that I needed to insert my room key to enter the hotel from the street on the convention center side suggested security concerns. You can walk to part of "Rt. 66," somewhat of a tourist attraction, and there is some nice outdoor art downtown (the city obviously puts a priority on art), but overall there isn't much within walking distance including restaurants. For breakfast though there is a nice little place on the corner just past the Convention Center that I recommend over the usual inflated hotel prices. The food in the restaurant hotel was fine (New Mexican) but the night we ate there for dinner it was so deserted that the friendly waitress was actually intrusive in the number of times she stopped by to see if we needed anything. The hotel bar area is very non-descript, not very inviting. The room was large, clean, and comfortable with minor negatives: the AC fan was very loud (kept waking me up at night when it came on) and the tub was very slippery- we put down a wet towel because there was no mat. There was no mini-fridge (apparently you can order one for an extra $10/night) and the ice bucket was small. The Internet worked fine. Parking was extra charge, but conveniently located.
On the positive side, EVERYONE on the staff we encountered was exceptionally friendly, not just in a routine trained-to-do-so way, but in a genuine way. (I added a star for service.) And of course the warm cookies at check-in are yummy. Nice view of the city and mountains on the horizon from the upper floors (there aren't many other tall buildings in ABQ).
If you have a car, it's not a far drive to the old town area (more charm there) or further out to the petroglyph national monument (we had a nice hike in one of the canyons there).

Room Tip: Great view from the 15th floor

After a phenomenally long drive into Albuquerque, we were cranky, tired and hungry. It was 9pm and we hadn't had dinner. Luckily, Christopher, our waiter at the restaurant (he's also the food and beverage manager), totally turned our evening around. He was pleasant, funny and concerned for one of our sick kids in the room. Before we left, he made up a care package of hot tea and warm bread for our youngster. The service at this hotel was superb, and we will use Doubletree again in other cities because of it. A special thanks to Christopher Dressler.

This hotel is very old and smells musty. The ceilings appear to be 8foot tall in the rooms. The hotel is clean and they do have bar and Starbucks in the Lobby, that was a plus! The location is downtown so they charge an additional $12 for parking (be aware).

All and all it was okay. I just expected a more updated property for a 3.5 star rated hotel.

I have been at this hotel three times and I come every Novemeber for a conference. First off, don't let the outside appearance fool you. It looks weathered on the outside, but it's a nice decor that you will find on the inside. The staff are friendly and do a nice job of keepting the hotels clean.

The rooms were ok. Nothing special, but they were clean and I slept very well here. The breakfast wasn't all that great and it is overpriced.

Here are the three main benefits for staying here:

1. Good location. I was able to walk to the convention center and to many restaurants and bars that serve craft beers.

2. Resonable prices: Sure you get what you pay for, but your dollar goes pretty far here. This isn;t a fancy hotel. If you are looking for a good hotel experience, with the frills, and the prices to have that experience then stay at the Hyatt. That is also a good experience.

3. Good customer service: This is a huge factor that I always look for. On my last stay we asked the front desk for their recommendation on a good taxi service because we were going to spend some time in Old Town. The front desk said that the hotel staff would be happy to drive us and then pick us up. It was better than paying for a taxi. I was pleasantly dueprised by this gesture and it was appreciated. Perhaps the hotel was aware of my Hilton status, or maybe they still remember the art of good customer service.

Very clean hotel with friendly staff. Everyone was helpful from check-in to check-out. The housekeeping staff does a very good job of cleaning the room. I would stay there again. Good location for business stays. Free shuttle service to & from airport & around town. Not available to other local hotels.

Stayed at the Doubletree March 15 -17 in room 1406. They have a shuttle from the airport and will take you to any place within 3 miles of the hotel. We didn’t rent a car and used the shuttle to get to Old Town and to/from the airport. The shuttle drivers are friendly and knowledgeable about the city. The hotel has a restaurant where we had the breakfast brunch each morning. Didn’t eat there for lunch or dinner so can’t comment on the food. (We had vouchers for the breakfast brunch so I can’t give you the price).

We had a coffee maker in the room but no refrigerator, unfortunately. The room had a loud air conditioner which, when it clicked on, drowned out the TV. Also, any loud talking in the hallway came right in the room, especially bad Saturday night when some drunks got off the elevator about 1 a.m. and tried to find their room. Another guest yelled out “Quiet” so we weren’t the only ones awakened.

We had drinks in the bar one evening. A gin & tonic was $10 and a glass of wine $13 - yikes!

Room Tip: 1406 overlooks the Convention Center and Convention Center Plaza. View from the room was good.

Hotel was ok. Wall was thin. Heard people talking in the hallway. The bed was ok. The shower was bit scary. Free shuttle and the driver is very nice. Good quality breakfast. Parking is expensive. Paid less price so not too much complains.
