“Husband got food poisoning at the buffet”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2011

The Hotel is very nice and clean. We tried it out for one night as I had a VA appointment. Sadly we ate at the lunch buffet on 31 March at around 1:00 pm. my husband ate the Posole and around 2am became sick over and over. He was forced to stay in the car while I had my VA appointment the next morning. He was so sick we were forced to ask to extend our stay. The only way they allowed us was if he signed up at the player club. We were stuck in the room all day friday due to him being sick. The room service forgot the ranch and the food was ok but not great. A chicken wrap and chicken sandwich meal with no drinks was thirty dollars.

This hotel is beautiful. It is probably the nicest casino hotel in New Mexico. The rooms are spacious, the place was immaculate. The service from the bellhops, valets, restaurant workers, Management Information Systems personnel (we had a tv issue) and casino workers was very good. It is a little smoky, but not as smoky as other casino hotels. Sandia is better than Isleta (don't know how it is now that Hardrock has taken over management of Isleta) and better than Buffalo Thunder.

I travel to Albuquerque a couple times a year to visit extended and Sandia Resort is my favorite place to stay. I've stayed at some very top notch places around the world so it's hard to give this a five (because Albuquerque isn't really a resort town) but I can't imagine much better in Albuquerque. It has a great golf course, great restaurant, great rooms, great pool area, decent workout facility, nice spa (especially by Albuquerque standards), nice casino, service is good (not great), and the value is incredible. My experience is this place is very inexpensive for the quality of the above things (rooms, pool, spa, etc). Location is also great (much more centrally located than the other nice resorts in town).

We enjoyed our visit, but we have to say that we will probably not return to this or any other casino hotel until better ventilation is an option. Maybe this is not Sandia's fault, but it really is unpleasant for a non- smoker to walk into this lovely lobby only to be overcome with the smell! We had a good time playing the slots, and we think the property is really quite beautiful. We had a fabulously lovely view of the mountains from our 8th floor balcony room (highly recommended). But we both had really sore throats within a couple of hours of leaving the gaming and eating areas. I had a great spa experience with a very talented and thoughtful masseuse (Melissa). I was so pleased and felt so pampered in the ladies-only shower, sauna, steam, and plunge-pool area. After my treatment I was treated to a lovely shower with every amenity I might want. I left feeling so relaxed and so clean.......................only to open the doors from the spa to the hotel lobby area and be bombarded with the smell of smoke. I ran to the elevator to minimize the amount of smell that could stick into my freshly washed hair. We stayed in our room later than we normally would have that evening, hoping to have some time in the public areas when traffic would be low. (Note: this was on a slow Monday, late October!) Sadly, that made no difference; the smoke has so permeated the walls and upholstery throughout the building. We are ex-smokers from many years ago who can probably tolerate a bit more exposure to smoke than some people can.

I understand that Sandia has no real control over this. (Except maybe upgrading the ventilation system and/or more frequent cleaning of the upholstery?) I don’t think that this property is any worse than the others in the area and I really don’t want to discourage people from going to Sandia. Just be forewarned that this is an issue so you will not be surprised when you get there. Maybe we can all just work toward a day that a truly non-smoking casino can be a profitable enterprise for the gaming industry?!? Hey, we can hope, right? (Note: my less-than-stellar rating on cleanliness refers to this issue; our room and the spa were both very clean.)

For the basics...........loved the room. Bedding was great and no trouble at all with noise from the hallway or neighboring rooms. Would be nice to have at least one lamp with a higher watt bulb for reading....kind of dark in bed area. Very good light in bath, though. Nice, but not great bath amenities. Never like any "shampoo/conditioner combo". If you have any real hair at all, these products cannot provide enough conditioner to help de-tangle. Excellent WIFI service in the room. Pool and pool bar area were shut down for the season, but looked very nice and we are sure it is a really fun area in season. They do have an outside Jacuzzi that was up and running and some nice fire pits that where burning in the pool area.

We were disappointed that the main restaurant was closed both nights of our stay (a Sunday and Monday). However the buffet worked out OK, and is actually better than many, other than the more upscale Las Vegas properties. Some nice dessert options. We did not use room service, but were impressed by the extensive room service menu.

Everything in the room worked except our A/C went amok the evening before our departure. Yes, it was late October, but the room still needed to be cooled down a bit. The unit would only put out hot air. Had to call 2X on Monday evening to get anyone to come up. Finally after about 75 minutes a service person arrived. He did a temporary fix to the problem, but warned that this needed serious cutting and a weld job to be a permanent fix. Thankfully what he did was enough to get us through the night without further problems.

One last little thing...........we had to wonder who approved the toilets in the public restrooms?!? I'm a fit, petite 5'2" woman, and they are a bit of a challenge for me to get down to and up from! They are so low the floor! I can't imagine how an overweight, elderly, or somewhat otherwise compromised person could deal with these toilets without issue! Nice touch to have the hand lotion dispensers in the public restrooms. This was appreciated and very much needed in a situation where washing hands is a frequent "must-do" in a very low-humidity situation.

Our first trip to Sandia was a pleasant surprise. We booked the STAY AND PLAY package. We thought it was a great bargain. We had a wonderful dinner at Bien Shur. Our room was quite large and as well appointed as any hotel in Vegas. The golf course was beautiful and the starter was a great ambassador for the resort. The casino had something to offer everyone (except no liquor served). We can't wait to go back!

The room was lovely and quiet; the pool was large, refreshing, and we could always find shares. They provided transportation to many places around Albuquerque, which made this an extremely convenient place to stay without the added expense of a taxi. The casino was smoky, which sometimes drifted into the regular hotel and rooms. But otherwise, we were extremely happy and would come back anytime.
