Shop the fragrances, eat the food. It's all good.

“Seriously out-of-the-way, seriously amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2008

Okay, so where to have lunch in Albuquerque? Well, on every visit, I go to the Model Pharmacy at least once. The place is super-awesome, and an great business model. The pharmacy has been located at this intersection for 50 years, give or take, although originally it was across Lomas, where -- get this -- a WALGREEN'S now stands. The fact that this locally-owned pharmacy continues to thrive directly across the street from a giant chain tells you a little something about how unusual this place is.

The sandwiches are great, altho I can't seem to stop myself from ordering a PB&J every time, despite knowing that the other choices must be better. I mean, PB&J? How bland can you get? But that's totally a personal problem... I'll work thru it eventually. Every sandwich comes with a side of really tasty potato chips, which if they aren't made locally sure taste like it.

Really, tho, it's all about the soda fountain. Ice cream sundaes, double chocolate malts... mmmmmm. They also make a mean fruit cobbler. And when you're done, you pretty much don't have a choice but to do some shopping, since the huge selection of toiletries and stationery is arranged in sort of a maze between the front door and the food. An obvious strategy, but a really effective one.

I found this place years ago completely by accident, and I don't think I've ever passed it up on any visit since. Worth going out of your way for!
