I have lived in Albuquerque-area for 20 years and never eaten at Barela's until today. My husband and I had almost given up going to any local New Mexican restaurants because they all had begun to taste "mass produced". Barela's has restored my faith in good, local New Mexican food! The restaurant is large and casual, and it was packed at lunchtime. It is near downtown, so you see clientele from all walks of life - lawyers, politicians, families, little old ladies. Everyone is welcome! The wait staff is fast and efficient and friendly. The food is hot and plentiful and the red and green chile is TASTY! I had the beef enchiladas with frijoles and hash browns, topped with a fried egg and red chile (~$8.00) . . . delicious! Parking is difficult, so you may have to park down the street or on the next block, but it is worth it. They are only open until 3:30 and are closed on Sundays.
