“Great Staff, But Desperately in Need of Updates.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

We have been coming to the Barcelona for about 25 years now, and in it's day it was a beautiful stylish place to stay.. but it desperately needs updates now. The rooms are roomy, but totally outdated and in need of repairs and TLC. For the price and amenities, it is not too bad if you just want room for a large group or family, but it could be so much better. The cook to order breakfast is nice, as long as you don't ask for two slices of bacon AND two sausage patties.
The best part of the stay is definitely the staff. When you check in you are treated like you are staying at a 4-5 star hotel. But when you get to the room, it drops to a 2.5 star. So much potential, hope someone comes in to rescue it soon.

Thank you for your kind comments about our hotel. We have taken your comments very seriously and have already upgraded the bedding in our rooms. We are hoping to add flat screen tvs as well. We are also to add additional upgrades later this year. We hope you will stay with us again so to experience these improvements.

Thank you again.

I read a lot of reviews before deciding to book the Barcelona Suites New Years Party package. Let me first start by saying that the experience in and of itself depends upon your level of expectation for the area in which you're staying... If you are familiar with Albuquerque, keep this in mind. Other than that, here is my review based on my experience.

1. From the outside, the property does not look like much, but once inside you will find a well-maintained, pretty, old-world Spanish style decor. Stained glass windows overhead and a pretty atrium.

2. Front desk was very cordial, helful, and friendly.

3. Parking (underground) was spacious and secure.

4. Upon entering our room (2-room suite, 2 queen beds and sleeper sofa), we noticed the room was ice cold. We turned up the heat on the thermostat and headed to dinner. When we returned, the room had not warmed at all, so we contacted the front desk to find out what the problem was. Maintenance came a bit later and solved the problem. About 1-hour later, the room finally warmed enough for us to change for the party. Noise level outside and above us (we were on floor one/plaza azul) was a bit loud. Children running around outside the room and stomping above made it difficult to sleep in. It also appeared that there are some guests at the hotel who use it as a residence... So there was some trash, cigarette butts (and smokers) outside of the room areas within the courtyard. The room itself was clean.

5. Party was held in the atrium. A mix of attendees in age, taste in music, etc. About 200 people attended. One thing we did notice was the amount of security personnel on hand... Definitely a necessity, since there were at least three fights throughout the night. DJ was OK, but he could have played more popular music to keep people dancing.

6. Bartenders... This is my big point of contention! There were two, probably not enough... But these two were not only slow, but confused and disorganized. On more than one instance, we waited 15 minutes or more to get a drink. Very frustrating!

7. The champagne toast and midnight buffet were great! Garcia's never disappoints, and there was PLENTY for everyone.

All in all, we made it a fun time and for the price it wasn't too bad. My only suggestions would be to ensure that the rooms were in order before guests arrive, that there are more than two bartenders (or at least two experienced bartenders), and keep a handle on the guest room courtyard areas for noisy neighbors and cleanliness.

Thank you for your wonderful comments about your hotel. I'm glad that you took the time to give us some feedback. We are using your comments as a training tool for our staff members. We have noted your comments about the bartenders and we will definitely be adding more staff next year. We are also working with our housekeeping staff to ensure they check all the items in the rooms before hand.

We have stayed there in the past (several years ago) and the place is still very nice. The staff is very accommodating and willing to help in any way they can. The current staff is a great improvement over past staffs. Some of the things like carpets, furniture and fixtures need to be upgraded. To me they looked dated and a little dirty. They were not torn or anything like that. We will definitely stay there again when we are back in the area. I believe that the place would be 5 + star if the owners would invest a middle amount of money and time to upgrade.

Thank you for your kind comments. We have been training our staff on customer service and we are glad that you had a good experience. We have noted your comments about the items in the rooms that need to be upgraded. We actually take our customer comments very seriously and have just upgraded our bedding, and hope to make more improvements in the rooms later this year.
We hope you will stay with us again to experience these great changes!

We won a contest and the prize was a weekend at the Barcelona Suites in Albuquerque. This hotel is old and had so much potential but it is poorly maintained. The floors throughout the foyer and dining area are grungy and really dirty. The rooms, albeit roomy and attractive, smell of smoke and are also dark and grungy. I wrote the management team a letter after our stay and whereas thay promised that they would look into the poor customer service we experienced and especially the basic dirty aspect of it all, when we stopped by three months later to see if they actually followed up, we were not surprised to see that the Barcelona was still a dirty and smelly hotel. The decor in this place has such outstanding potential that it's a real shame they are just letting it go. There is no way that we would stay here again. I felt like I needed a shower after we left.

Thank you for you comments about the hotel. We do remember your stay and used your comments as a training tool for our staff members. Our floors are Saltillo tiles and we deep clean them every month along with daily mopping. The look and feel of those types of tiles is an older, spanish look. The smoke smell from your room was due to other guests smoking in our plaza areas. After your comments, we made all of our plazas non smoking plazas and no longer allow guests to smoke in front of their room doors. We do have daily cleaning of all of our public areas and maintain all trash areas and plazas areas with a daily cleaning checklist. I'm sorry that your opinion of our hotel was different. We would happy to discuss with you again over the phone - you can call me anytime at 505-255-5566.

Andrew at the front desk was warm and gracious! The hotel interior and rooms are spacious and nicely appointed. The room itself was quite comfortable and very quiet. The breakfast was delicious, the coffee was some of the best I have experienced while staying at a hotel.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

My husband was traveling to Albuquerque on business, and I had time off so I went along. He stayed at Barcelona Suites on his last trip and was really impressed, and after some initial skepticism I was too. We stayed in a room with a queen bed which had a vanity sink/mirror, as well as a medium-sized bathroom and a living room/kitchenette area. Both the living room and the bedroom had CRT tvs. We stayed for 5 nights..

Pros: For the price, especially offered through sites like expedia and priceline, the large room and service were exceptional. Everyone at the front desk was always very nice and accommodating, and in particular the breakfast chef was wonderful. I'm not a huge breakfast person, but his bacon, eggs (cooked to order), and hashbrowns were delicious. I actually ran the front desk out of dollar bills asking for change every morning so that I could leave him tips (there are tip jars on the counter, please show your appreciation!) It was such a great start to the morning to sit in the huge atrium and watch the tvs or the fountain.

The maid staff was also great; when I accidentally left the "do not disturb" sign on the doorknob one day they left fresh towels in a plastic bag outside the door.

Lastly, the architecture was beautiful; I'm not sure what the history of this building is or who they're owned by now, but it must have been maintained very well to still have the 'wow' factor when you first walk in.

Cons: The garage was difficult to navigate for our large rental car, but it was nice to have covered parking. In the kitchen area there was a microwave and a nice counter, but no sink! That I found a little odd, but is probably just a legacy of the plumbing construction which wasn't thought through completely. Also, the windows in the bedroom had a 'view' of the outdoor swimming pool which was a little grody-looking after falling into disuse during the winter months. (The indoor pool/hottub area looked nice however, but we didn't use it.)

tl;dr : For the price point, this hotel exceeds expectations. The staff goes out of their way to be friendly and help you out, and the building and rooms are clean and well-maintained. If you want a nice room with great service at a moderate cost in beautiful Albuquerque, make your reservation here.

Dear JessicaLH

Thank you for you comments about our hotel. We will definitely pass on your kind comments about our hotel to the other staff members. We actually are now installing 20 sinks in our rooms as many guests are requesting them as you did. We also have a daily checklist in place to make sure the outdoor pool is being maintained.

Thank you so much

The hotel is beautiful with lots of plants and fountains. The rooms are spacious - 2 rooms (living room w/ a pull out couch, TV, desk, and a small kitchenette w/ microwave, refrigerator, and drawer/counter space PLUS a bedroom w/ 2 queen beds, tv, sink....LOTS of room). The indoor heated pool and hot tub are clean and the kids really enjoyed it. The free breakfast isn't your typical hotel fare - you can have eggs, hashbrowns, sausage/bacon cooked to order or choose cereal, toast, waffles, bagels (the usual). free Underground parking - hotel is located near lots of shopping and restaurants.

My only complaint - the bed wasn't very comfortable.
