“Nice hike with rewards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We arrived late in the day, so parked outside the gates as they close at 5pm, there were a few others doing the same. It was a beautiful day for a hike, make sure you wear good walking shoes, but the walk is well worth it! Very interesting pictures and beautiful views.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

This was our first experience with Petrology. Walking distances were varied for all abilities. Would be extremely hot in the summer, but the fall was a perfect time to visit.

“Great hike, viewing petroglyphs very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We took the short hike around the trail in petroglyph national monument. there are several hiking options from very easy to more strenuous. We stopped at the visitor center first and picked up a trail map, which was helpful. We did the moderate hike at Piedras Marcadas canyon. It took about 1 hour and the trail is almost completely sand. The trail is not difficult because of climbs, the sand makes it a bit more challenging. The trail is marked to some degree, but there are many areas where the trail seems to split off and it is hard to know which way to go. It could be marked better. That said, viewing the petroglyphs was SOOOO COOL! They were very close to the trail and easily viewed. Definitely worth the trip.

“Get up close to petroglyphs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

I was pleasantly surprised that you could get so close to the petroglyphs. Try to do this early before it gets hot as there is no shade.

“Nice desert hike with good scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

My wife and I hiked one of the petroglyph trails in the park (Piedras Marcadas) and took a hike to one of the volcanos. We enjoyed spotting the petroglyphs and discussing what we thought they looked like. We took pictures and even chased a jackrabbit across the desert to try and get a picture, but it was too fast. The volcano was a little disappointing as it was just a mountain with a couple of volcanic rocks at the top (not sure what we were expecting though). All in all it is a nice place to visit. Plan to spend a couple hours and stop by the visitors center first to pick your trails or get a map from their website. The rangers there are very nice and eager to help you.
