Since there was to be no remembrance of the Confederate dead after the war, a group of women raised money from each state and contacted Louis Comfort Tiffany to create stained glass windows for a small abandoned church. Each of the windows serves as a memorial to the dead of a particular Confederate state. Tiffany chose saints who were martyrs for each of the windows and each state wrote their own words of tribute that are incorporated at the bottom of each window. Even though we were there on a cloudy day, the windows have an unbelievable luminescence and brilliance of color. Several of the saints look so lifelike, they look like they could step right out of the window.
When the 10 month seige of Petersburg ended, there were 22,000 dead in that city and the government refused to bury Confederate soldiers so these same women raised the money to buy the land for this cemetery and over 5 years, had all the dead buried here.
