Last winter my husband and I decided that we had had enough of the cold and snow of Ontario and that it would be nice to spend it in warmer weather. After many questions , much discussion and research we decided on Rio RV Park in Brownsville Texas. Their brochure showed a nice clean park with decent size lots, heated pool and activities, free internet and long distance calls to Canada. We called for reservations in February 2007 for the winter of 07/08. We told them that we had a 35" 5th wheel with 3 tip -outs. They told us that there would be no problem and that we would have a premium lot.
We arrived in Brownsville as scheduled and after registering at the office we were led by the owner to the back of the park to our lot.
What a surprise !!!!!! The lot was narrow with crumbling asphalt as a pad for the trailer and no patio to speak of, we barely had room to open our 8' x 16' awning and there was no yard space. Even worse than that was what was right on our door step, a rusty old motorhome with a grey tarp over the roof and aluminium insolation covering all the windows. When you invest thousands of dollars to equip yourself with a decent trailer and truck it is not what you want as a neighbor.
When we questioned the owner about where the premium lots were much to our surprise he answered that we were on one.
We decided that we would try to make the best of the situation and tried to ignore the mess outside. But that was just the beginning, the brochure had mentioned Wi-Fi available on each site so were again surprised when we were unable to open our computer to send messages to family and friends that we had arrived safely. When we asked the owner about it his answer was" We're working on it" and that there was a modem for our use near the office. We checked it out and found a room of about 8x8 twith a desk top computer , phone for long distance calls and 2 modems but no privacy at all because they are all so close together. we decided to wait a few days to see if we would finally log-in at our trailer. We did manage to log-in after a few days but it would work very sporadically so was not very reliable. Talking to others that have been here for some time(some as long as 4 years) , we find out that the internet has not worked properly for a long time. The answer is always " be patient we're working on it". and if we ask how long it will take he gets very upset and says that we are not listening to him.
In addition to all of this, the heater on the pool was not working.
Adding to all this is the owner's seemingly indifferance to any of our concerns and questions.
After sticking it out for just 10 days, we decided that we couldn't spend 5 months being unhappy with everything. We finally left on Nov 15, along with two other couples that were across the road from us, for something much cleaner and where the owners can't do enough to ensure that our stay is enjoyable.
I would definitely not recommend this park for any long stay as they seem to keep the nicer lots for short stays. and over-nighters.
