“Classic Brownsville”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

A visit to the downtown location of the Oyster Bar was like a trip back in time. The fried shrimp was great -- very fresh, lightly battered and promptly served. The décor is definitely retro, and takes you back to the 1970s. The staff was friendly and attentive. I recommend this place.

“The downtown/old town Oyster Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2013

This is a classic, old style seafood restaurant serving good food without the frills. The seafood is fresh - the oysters and shrimp particularly good when we were there - and the menu is pretty basic. The big seafood plate has raw and fried oysters, cocktail and fried shrimp, and a fried fish filet. Pretty much everything comes with a dill pickle chip on top, including the raw oysters, but this seems to be a pretty standard garnish in Brownsville. And is actually pretty good. Others has the stuffed shrimp, fried shrimp, and fried oysters and they were all good. Raw oysters were quite nice - plump and large, from the warmer waters, with a nice briny taste. This place would fit right in if located in any seaside resort area, but it is in downtown Brownsville. There is another location on Parades Road, next to Vermillion, but we haven't been there. Yet.

“Great seafood lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I have eaten here a number of times for years now and the food is always great. I had the half and half order (fried shrimp and fried oysters) and it's always delicious. Unlike other places where they heavily bread their shrimp and oyster, here the breading is just right. Their service staff is great and friendly.

“No Frills Seafood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

This restaurant could share the slogan of the adjoining Vermillion Restaurant - not fancy, just good. Decor is very plain, no tablecloths, paper napkins. The wine list consists of red or white; they also have beer, but no hard liquor. Most seafood choices are fairly basic, fried or broiled. Our orders took a good deal longer to arrive than the 15 minutes the menu says to allow for fried or broiled dishes. My broiled shrimp were good, but not memorable, and I couldn't decide whether the french fries were frozen or home-made. The salad consisted of a pile of iceberg lettuce with a chunk of tomato and two slices of pickle. My wife had a fish filet - she neglected to specify whether she wanted it fried or broiled, and the waitress didn't ask. It came fried. My wife said it was good. Prices are quite reasonable. In short, if you don't expect much, you will do okay here.

“Good food, service, and prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

The Oyster Bar Downtown is an historic Brownsville restaurant that has been around for decades and decades. The service is usually good. The food is prepared fresh and served hot and delicious. Prices are low to moderate. I recommend the fish fillet, which is broiled orange roughy. Delicious! It's dark in there, so give your eyes a few minutes to adjust. Other than that, it's first-rate
