“Love this Family friendly Zoo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Great for the entire family.
Really enjoy the rest areas, and the upgrades that they are making.
The kids splash zone is a good break from the heat and the services provided are good too.
Gift shop could use some revamping and maybe some upgrades, space is crampt at times when full of customers and not easy to navigate. One cashier made for a long wait.

“Great Zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

This zoo has constantly grown and improved since my first visit in 1978 with my children. You don't have to take kids with you to have a great time though. During the summer months, it is best to go early or late. Many of the animals hide away during the hot part of the day.

“A compact and well kept zoo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Very much enjoyed this zoo. I grew up near the Washington National Zoo, which is huge. The Gladys Porter Zoo has roomy enclosures for the animals, while allowing people to get close enough to the animals for a good view. There is an enclosed reptile house, an aviary, and a small butterfly garden area. Good variety of animals and the grounds are clean.

“Awful.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Where else has everyone visited? This zoo is disgusting. There are signs that are in place for a reason, yet no one follows them. How about getting some weekend staff or volunteers to clean up the habitats. "Coins can kill" sign, yet there are about 30 coins in the aquatic exhibit. There are plastic bags, containers and junk food within the exhibits. I saw a duck trying to eat a ketchup packet in it's water. What the heck? Also, for the petting zoo, where is a zoo keeper? So many unsupervised children with the animals and people feeding them popcorn and fruit with spices. Have some pride in your animals and get your act straight. If I was your inspector, I would shut you down.

Everywhere you would purchase something, they would ask "would you like to donate to help feed the animals?" I told the gift shop cashier that there was no problem with the animals being fed, their habitats do need to be cleaned. She just gave me a look like "Thanks for telling me, but I don't care."

One thing good about this zoo is that the animals are trained and friendly to amuse their audience. The flamingos, and chimpanzees are a riot!
