“Oceanside resort Sunspree”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

This hotel is a great family place to stay in North Padre Island, as most of the hotels are on the mainland side and there are jellyfish over there. Thats why we love this spot, good waves, ocean access and close to the ocean, nice pool and hot tub. Family friendly environment but no free breakfast. Rooms are unusually small but adequate. You are definitely paying for ocean access, pool, restaurant and ambiance as the price has risen significantly since we started going here.
There is a gift shop with some pool toys and sundries and they have daily activities for kiddo's as well. The items are priced reasonable.
The nice thing about this hotel is the outside bar and snack shop, and live music on the weekends. Its really nice to be out there with the light breeze, a cool drink, a live band and people dancing and having a great time by the pool.
They also rent beach toys and surfboards and cabana's and lounge chairs. (Nothing is free) The beaches are pretty clean and it's a nice stay plus you can go from the beach to the outside shower and to the pool.
The drawback is that there is nothing special about the rooms. No big beds because the rooms are small and simple but you spend most of your time outdoors anyway.

Its a short drive to the mainland for restaurants and activities and everything is right off of the freeway and its easy to find your way back.

No one welcomes pets on the Island but they do have a kennel you can board your pet. Its too hot to leave any animal in a car at all.

Ocean side views are offerred but front ocean rooms are more costly and the windows are often salty and foggy. I think they only offerred two full size beds.

Room Tip: If you can afford an upgrade, get it, it will be worth it.

Rooms and rates were OK for this time of year. Easy to upgrade to a balcony view but customer service was not so good. The phone didn't work the first morning and the code to access internet they gave us did not work. No one at the front counter to get help and after walking around the inside lobby area still could not find someone to help. Took almost two hours to locate anyone for customer service issues.

Room Tip: Make sure upon entering room your phone works and report problems right away. Make sure upon registe...

We spent two nights here following Christmas while in town visiting relatives. If you're looking for a hotel on the beach on the Gulf side of town, this is probably your best bet. Pick this hotel for the view and easy access to the beach, not for a restful stay.

We've stayed here off and on since 1993. Over the years, the property has been updated with the rooms more or less resembling the current amenities of Holday Inn Express. Check-in was fast and friendly and the rates matched our reservation. The lobby was clean except for beach sand footprints and was slightly humid. Our third-floor room (308) had a balcony overlooking the beach. The window glass was dirty and the drapes covered all but a six-inch strip in the center. This caused the room to fill with very bright sunlight as soon as the sun rose over the Gulf. It had a 32-inch flatscreen TV, with in-room movies, HBO and limited other stations. The two queen beds had firm mattresses and four pillows on each. The pillows had some odd, decorative cloth bands that had to be removed before you could sleep on them. When we arrived, we found the wall lamp between the beds was unplugged and had to move one bed away from the wall to locate the wall outlet and plug it back in. There was a refrigerator and a safe near the bathroom. Unfortunately, the batteries were dead on the safe, making it unusable. The bathroom has a granite countertop and the right number of towels for your group. Next to the sink were complimentary soaps, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and tar remover. The toothpaste packet had been opened and used. There was plenty of very hot water and an exhaust fan in the ceiling. The toilet flushed with the force and sound of a jet engine. The room was fairly clean - no tar stains on the carpet, but there were what appeared to be crumbs here and there. While there were no water or mold stains on the ceiling, the wall next to the desk was dirty.

The beach in front of the hotel is clean. A short walk east on the beach takes you to an area under construction that smells strongly of raw sewage. Stretched across the length of the beach was a large, flexible pipe that ended just past the west property line. Each morning before 7am, a loud bulldozer which sounded like it had no muffler drove down the beach in front of our balcony, to the end of the pipe, where nasty black liquid was being pumped onto the beach near the waterline. It drove back and forth through the water, filing in the erosion caused by the liquid. Between the bright sunlight leaking in through the curtains and the loud bulldozer on the beach, it was impossible to sleep late in this room...that is, if you get to sleep much during the night.

The sound of the waves would be soothing, if the walls of the room weren't so thin. On our first night, the neighbors on the right side had what sounded like a dozen small laughing children watching TV. Luckily, they quieted down around 8pm. On our second night, the neighbor on the left side left his TV on HBO all night long and snored loudly, which pretty much drowned out the sounds of the surf.

Summary: Great view of a quiet, clean beach until the black water starts pumping and the bulldozer arrives. Fairly clean rooms with thin walls. Stay here for the view, not for a good night's rest.

Other tips on the area: Corpus Christi tap water has a strong odor and bad taste. Buy bottled waters at the Stripes convenience store around the corner and store them in your refrigerator. As tempting as it may sound, pass on the special three service station enchiladas and two sides for $3.99. It's hard to beat Snoopies for fried fish and beers overlooking the water. Watch out for speed traps as you come off the bridge onto the island.

If there was an available king size bed at Comfort Inn or Hawthrone, I would try their before this hotel. We booked for 12/31 & check out 1/1/2012... so I guess it was pretty busy. I asked the room to be away from the elevator & ice machine... well, we got a room right next to the elevator. Good customer service from the front desk. The room was better than I thought since we had a partial ocean view from the room. There is another building right next to the window so had to leave the curtains closed.
Only one day staying... I guess it was okay experience. But I would definately try other hotels before I come back to this one.

This is our third stay and we really enjoy the island and this hotel. Our room provided a partial view of the ocean but plenty for us. The proximity to the ocean is perfect. Sunrise breakfast, daytime fishing and nighttime walks was our schedule with short drives to area shopping, food and beaches. The staff is very friendly from the front desk, room maids and to the gift shop workers. We usually try to stay at free breakfast hotels with 2 teen sons, but its a short drive to Stripes for breakfast food and free coffee in the lobby. We plan to return one to two times per year to the area and this hotel is our first pick IF we can afford it. Room prices do fluxuate and we have had to stay elsewhere due to personal budget constraints.

Room Tip: If you are on a budget, we have had ocean views from the cheapest of rooms BUT try to get a higher f...

Basic Holiday Inn, but a nice location on the beach. We didn't use them, but convenient pools & hot tub overlooking the beach. Rooms and lobby area were very clean - no issues. Ate out, so I can't comment on their restaurant, either.

We’ve stayed at this Holiday Inn on several occasions and will do so in the future. If you want to be right on the beach this is the best you can get in North Padre. Walk out the lobby entrance, turn left, and the beach is less than 100 ft away. The beach is the main reason we stay there. The hotel is older and a little dated. There’s no free breakfast. The staff are cordial, but not your typical Texas friendly. Because it’s on the beach you sometimes get some noisy late night partiers. Other than the Holiday Inn restaurant, you don’t have to many restaurant choices nearby. If you want to go to a national restaurant chain, it’s 10 mile drive back to Corpus Christi.
On this trip we used our reward points, which we’ve done before. They always tell us their upgrading us to a room that can see the beach, but they also give us the same room across from the elevator and near something mechanical that hums non-stop. Certainly not their best room. Someday I will spring for a room facing directly toward the beach with a balcony.
