“Could be 5 star, but food is oh soo soo bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2012

We stayed at the Gaylord for the recent fencing competition. The hotel is beautiful, very new, open and clean. Don't foget swimwear because the pool is beautiful, as is the jacuzzi. The rooms are fresh and average size. Staff is attentive. Remember that the hotel is HUGE. Kids will love riding the elevators up and down, and there is a water show that draws kids like magnets. The only problem is the food. It is horrible. The worst is the Italian buffet restaurant. For the salad offerings, there was just cucumbers and tomatoes and lettuce, that's it. no peppers, carrots, etc. There was no pasta and red sauce for the kids. Just over cheesy and dried out mac and cheese. The pizza looked like it had been sitting out for hours. We also ate at the sports bar, which was slightly better. You are much better leaving the hotel and Oxen Hill and driving to better food. We didn't try Old Hickory, so can't comment on that. We went to Mustang something with the mechanical bull, which was ehh. It was fun watching the bull ride however. We will definitely stay at the Gaylord in the future, but never ever will eat there. There is a CVS down the street which is convenient for snacks/water/soda.

Room Tip: do not, repeat, not, eat at the hotel. Except for Old Hickory, which we didn't try, restaurants...

On this return trip to Gaylord National, I went the first week of December for a conference. It was decorated for family events, and even though I did not have kids with me, I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Every moment was perfect. The employees go out of their way to be polite and helpful. If you want a hassle-free experience, this is it. I do wish the prices were lower, though.

Room Tip: Ask for a view - though realize that the rooms facing into the atrium can have a view as well as the...

This is a huge resort with an extremely friendly and helpful staff. The guest rooms are large, modern and very comfortable. Be prepared to walk down the very long hallways to find your room. Despite multiple elevators, the distance to some rooms is lengthy. If you have trouble walking, ask for a room near an elevator. There are several restaurants inside the resort as well as within walking distance. Only one in the resort serves breakfast (buffet) in addition to the coffee counter that only has pastries. It's not well suited to touring the DC area because there is no metro stop nearby. I had heard there was a bus to a metro stop, but I don't know everyone who tried it. It's clearly a facility built and designed for conventions, and they do it well.

I was very apprehensive about travelling alone for a one-day meeting here last August. I'm remiss in not reporting that it was very easy to navigate and I felt safe there. I would definitely attend another meeting there, and I would turn it into an overnight to enjoy the resort. The lunch served was fantastic, and pharmacy meetings are not reknown for their food.

Part of our Christmas gifts this year included a trip to the Gaylord National for a fun mini-trip. We had a great time at the ICE event while in FL a few years back and thought it would be fun to visit again, this time with the chance to actually stay at the Gaylord. After seeing the Gaylord Palms in Orlando, the National left you a bit short, but the hotel is still impressive. I love the concept of the Gaylord hotels, having an atrium full of your own personal adventure. And the National was totally decked out for the holiday season. Exiting the highway to get to the National Harbor area is quite different from anything around the DC area, so it was nice to feel like you were entering a small island-like area of new, hip restaurants and hotels. However, it all comes with a pricetag. The Gaylord is in no way a cheap hotel, however, being a long-running fan of Starwood properties, the hotel does not seem to reinvest the major bucks back into the lodging part of the hotel. Lots of effort is given to the atrium but something just fell short in the room itself. One suggestion to management: a detailed informational in the room would have been nice. We really felt lost in this hotel. And the amount of traffic throughout the hotel is crazy, but there is a lot to see and do. Part of our ICE package included breakfast with Shrek and friends, which was crazy fun. This is a must do even if you don't have little ones. The buffet was delicious, try the waffles: they are green batter, but are CRAZY Good! Only issue we had was the waitstaff was very stingy with the drinks. They would fill the juice glass about 1/4 of the way. The Italian restaurant was very good; set up as a buffet which offered a fairly good variety. The sports bar restaurant was blah, just overpriced hotel food. All restaurants are very pricey but the convienence of being right in the hotel is nice. The pool is quite a hike to get to and I am not crazy about having to trek around in a swimsuit/coverup through a crowded lobby/atrium. I can't imagine when dripping wet. The hotel really should've thought about creating a better way to get to the pool/fitness area for the guests. Overall, I would like to visit again for the ICE event but will probably opt to stay at the Westin and just visit the Gaylord for dinner. There just seems to be too many fees built into the hotel.

Room Tip: If you are interested in using the pool be sure to request a room on that side of the hotel, otherwi...

My wife and I spent two days and a night at the Gaylord National on December 23rd and 24th. The resort was decorated for Christmas and the Merry Madagascar Ice Experience. They did a great job creating a family friendly experience for kids of all ages.

We were one of the few adult couples without kids with them at the resort during our stay. We wanted to get away for a night and had friends that went the year before that recommended it. While we had an enjoyable time it was not an atmosphere designed for a romantic getaway.

Although they were extremely busy, check in was a breeze, the room was nice (typical resort, convention center kind of room), very clean and had a nice view of the national harbor.

We visited the Ice exhibit, 2 million pounds of carved brightly colored ice, very cool!

I was not overly impressed with the National Harbor. It is an architect designed town that misses the mark, in my book, of having any kind of heart. I would much rather spend a few hours across the Potomac walking through old town Alexandria than walking through the very commercially contrived experience of National Harbor.

I would highly recommend taking your kids or grandchildren for a day and night, but would probably wait till they were at least four years old, so they are old enough to enjoy and possibly remember the experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a High floor facing the Potomac or National Harbor

Stayed for four nights to attend a convention at the hotel.

Overall everything worked smoothly. The room was quite large. Everything worked. The wifi was good. And the staff were pleasant and helpful.

The hotel is a bit too large and "cookie cutter" in my opinion, although the size could be an attraction for some.

The food also was not great.

All in all, for a convention, this is a good hotel. I am not sure I would stay here for a vacation though.
