“National Harbor came with a hard sell from the time share "review'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2010

Traveled here w/friends. National Harbor is still under development and is the polar opposite of Old Alexandria! 2 bedroom presidential unit was spacious and wonderful except for the 2 tiny balconies that barely accommodates 2 people. View was construction lots. There is no nearby shopping -DO NOT go to the closer Safeway...going to Giant is worth the extra time...couldn't even get a bag of chips anywhere nearby. The concierge was excellent. We used the inexpensive bus (need exact change) to the Metro Station to visit museums in DC. Used the water-taxi to Old Alexandria...very nice!

Upon check in we were told that because the building has been open for 3 months, our update session would consist of our evaluation of the new property for 30 minutes. UNTRUE...it was the hardest push for a sale of any sessions we have been to and the "2nd" salesman was pushy and rude. We were not made to feel valued as a Platinum member or appreciated. It was basically "If you don't buy this now, we'll punish you later"

This was our first trip to Washington and we were lucky to find such great accomodations (we are accustomed to staying at timeshares (Marriott), suite hotels (Embassy), or rental homes). We had a new 2 bedroom/2bath unit with fully equiped kitchen, 3 TVs, internet access, wonderful beds, clean, and nicely decorated. Parking was a breeze at the garage across the street (you got your ticket from the hotel to check in and out all week) and paid $11/day when you checked out of the hotel. There was plenty of room for parking we always parked next to the elevator on the 3rd floor. As for traveling to the sites - we just drove into the city (about 15-30 minutes one way depending on traffic) - we're used to traffic in San Francisco, San Diego & Atlanta (we didn't consider it any different). Parking downtown was $16-20/day and was easy to find during our week. National Harbor is NEW....the restaurants near by are expensive but seemed busy enough. It was easy to walk around the area and we felt perfectly comfortable/safe - you should walk over to see the Gaylord while your here & down to the harbor. There isn't a really good supermarket close by (they are planning but for now this would be the only negative we had). The staff were ALL friendly, accomodating, and helpful. The indoor pool was small (and kinda loud) but it will help when the weather warms up and they open the outdoor pool area. They have a WII room, fitness room, pool and foosball tables, game room, etc - so if the kids aren't tired enough after touring all day.......
There is no laundry in the room but free laundry facilities on each floor (soap was in the unit). Since we used our own car we only "heard" about the bus services into the city; but we did take a on/off trolley tour the first day and it picked us up at the end of the street (in front of the Westin) and dropped us off at the end of the day at the Wyndham. Great intro to the city. I would highly recommend these accomodations.

Full disclosure: We have a substantial ownership investment in National Harbor. We want desperately for National Harbor to be the world class resort it purports to be. Unfortunately, it isn't. We were terribly disappointed with the quality of construction, facility cleanliness and maintenance, and the staff. This is a new resort and we hope the problems we observed are due to the newness of the resort and that management attention will improve things. We will stay there again in August 2010 to see if anything has improved. We will attend owner meetings, most anything to protect our investment.

We stayed in a 2BR Presidential unit -- the same size as regular 2BR units but with upgraded kitchen appliances, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, furniture, and bath amenities (foo foo soaps, shampoos, etc.). Oh! and pillows. You can't sit without moving pillows.

The unit was dirty -- dust and debris on the floor, food under furniture cushions, a heel mark in the hot tub, sticky stuff on the refrigerator door and kitchen sink faucet, and on and on. Meanwhile, housekeeping staff is hanging out in the hallways eating the chocolates that they're supposed to put on bed pillows.

Front desk staff is barely competent and very defensive when presented with complaints. Outside staff helps with unloading whether you want it or not, with hands out for tips. The parking situation is bizarre as noted in another review.

National Harbor has a lot to recommend itself. The Gaylord complex is stunning, similar to Opryland Hotel in Nashville and, we hear, to other Gaylord facilities. Restaurants and shops (or shoppes) are numerous and very expensive with more coming. Families will have a hard time getting by without busting budgets. There is room for growth, lots of retail space still to be occupied and supposedly a Disney development up the hill. If the Disney development is going to be a family oriented resort, there will have to be some family-priced restaurants and shopping.

All of this bodes well for Wyndham National Harbor's future. But the potential will not be realized until management and staff of Wyndham National Harbor realize that Wyndham did not build the resort to provide jobs. This is not a social program.

We have hopes for Wynham National Harbor but for now, the best thing is that it is close to our home in Virginia.

Not recommended, not yet.

This location is one of Wyndham's newest stars. Impressively beautiful and a little out of the way if you're doing the DC sights. Use the bus and Metro System to get into DC and plan your trip accordingly.

Drawbacks: no grocery store close (it's coming but not open yet). So buying essentials to stock the kitchen takes some planning.
Pluses: nice hot tub and pool. Great gym. Restaurants within walking distance. If you're looking for night life make reservations. The sidewalks are wide, well lit and safe to walk.

We had problems with front desk clerk named Mohammed. He was rude and gave us all misinformation. He was not customer friendly. The resort is a new WYNDHAM property and it is up to Wyndham standards. We didn,t have hot water for our stay from 05MAR to 10MAR2010. We had two 3bedroom villas and one 2bedroom villas. They have to work out problems in all three units. These problems were due to poor construction which isn't Wyndhams fault. When you notify the staff with problems they rectify your concerns immediately. The parking is awful. Parking lot is privately owned and their staff treats you like you are a dog. Wyndham staff had to intervene everytime you exitted the garage. Sometimes you had to run back and forth from the garage to the front desk 3 and 4 times in one day. I will not return to this resort until this problem is rectified. The rooms are beautiful and well maintained. Shuttle buses to the D>C> Metro are across the street. ou can explore our nations capitol without driving your vehicle. Visit this resort and enjoy Washington,D.C. The area has nightly entertaiment in walking distance. there are three airports close by.
