We are Wyndham owners, first trip to DC, and loved our stay at National Harbor!
We had a Presidential and the unit was lovely. The resort is walking distance to the harbor and many shops and restaurants, and is about 10 miles from the city of DC.
Resort suite and rooms; We had a 3 bedroom Pres. Presidential comes w/ WD in the unit and full kitchen. Jacuzzi tub is awesome! There is a DVD and DC player combo, so bring your movies and Cd's! (Tip: read the book in unit for instructions to work DVD!) Kitchen has coffee pot, full stove, all pots, pans, dishes, micro, blender, toaster. Iron and ironing board. Beds and pillows are super comfy.
National Harbor area; Restaurants/markets: TIP: On trip advisor search under "OXON HILL, MD." In general it is very PRICEY in the area, so be prepared and if you can bring some of your own food times if you are driving. Bring deli sandwich makings, water bottles, snacks, and esp. breakfast items as there are few options for breakfast here.
**Gourmet Market? We were disappointed at the "gourmet" market; they had little in the way of deli or cheeses and crackers and variety of sandwiches. They did have some items like wine, some produce, meats, and a few sandwiches (turkey?) premade. But there was some deli items at CVS downstairs from Wyndham and they also had a 7/11 type mini mart w/ frozen pizza and a few frozen meals and some deli meats and breads. Milk and other items needed for breakfast. And a full chips/candy/snack area. They had more sandwiches made than the market! and nice salads, some w/ chicken, and cut fruit. Good selection! And a full CVS pharmacy and any type of incidentals. That is literally downstairs and around the corner.
Across the street, the place called Nando's Peri Peri got rave reviews for their chicken from the locals who eat here all the time. You can get 1/4,.1/2 or a full chicken (Full chicken w 2 large sides was around $23+? so a good choice for less money !) There are a couple of sandwich shops (we got sandwiches at Potbelly' reasonable and very good!) and a Chicago hot dog place, as well as Subway. All are near the water, about 3+ blocks walking distance. None are right next to the hotel. All of the other sit down restaurants look amazing, but we only had a couple of meals out in this area. Many of the places have outdoor seating and it is a lovely area if weather permits to sit outside along the restaurants on the street. it is a great place to walk and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We felt VERY safe here, even after dark, all well lit, a lot of security and police presence and you cannot get lost it is so well laid out. Great esp. if you do not have kids, as it was kind of a hip, upscale, downtown hang out atmosphere at sunset.
TIP: GREAT happy hour menus and deals here! McCormick and Schmick's has $3 hamburgers and other deals, there are other deals between 4-7 to draw people in, so research and plan ahead!
Our favorite restaurant was ** McLoons** right on the water. EXCELLENT meal, seafood and steaks. (See my review) and we will go back there for sure! We looked here on Trip Advisor (look under Oxon Hill, MD, that is the area that National Harbor is located. We looked at all multiple steak places and they all got good review, but we liked the menu best here and we were so glad we went. Wonderful food and service!
**Other tips? Bug spray or use those fans that keep bugs away! When walking outside, sitting on the balcony outside, and got really bitten up.
PARKING at the Wyndham: Nice big garage w/ easy access, $12 per day and you can go in and out all day. Very safe and easy to park, elevator access. Very good parking situation! (Parking in DC; IF you drive in, take quarters, and take your credit card. Parking is hard to find, expensive and the metro is the best/fastest/cheapest/easiest way to see the city.)
Tip: If you plan to tour DC w/ out a car and use the metro, the Wyndham has a pick up area for a shuttle right out front of the hotel. They leave DAILY at 9:30 am and take you over to Alexandria (only about 2? 3? miles away?) to get the metro. they bring you back at 5 or 6?? Something like that. All the tours pick up there is my understanding. Ask the concierge at Wyndham, they were great with anything we needed.
Enjoy your trip!
Presidential suites have washer dryer in the units.
