“Better than Expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

I went to this location in National Harbor to visit Washington DC and attend the Cherry Blossom Festival rather than staying in the center of DC because a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit was available through my RCI timeshare. I thought the very low cost for a week's stay would be worth the inconvenience of commuting into the city. Luckily, I was right although I was concerned based on the mixed reviews. I did a lot of on line forum talking with the DC experts before I made my decision. I called the Wyndham in advance and requested a higher floor. We stayed in room 814. There are 11 floors. It was modern, clean, quiet and the bedrooms and baths were on opposite ends of the suite so there was privacy for 2 women traveling together. The free Wifi was an easy log on and fast. The kitchen was well equipped with the basics, and actually had good coffee which is rare. We had no housekeeping services, but they replenished our towels, coffee, and microwave popcorn whenever we asked. We used the Chariots for Hire Van service from Gaylord's which is right next door to the Wyndham to get into Washington every day. The van runs out of Gaylord's every 90 minutes and and it takes about 20 minutes to get to the first stop which is Union Station, right next to the Capitol. The second stop is the Old Post Office which is in the heart of all the downtown action. We paid $49 per person for a 3 day roundtrip pass. It was well worth it, and the only transportation from DC back to National Harbor that has a late return in the evening which is 8:30 pm from the Old Post Office. We looked at the bus and the metro from NH, but it was a big hassle in comparison to this convenient, safe and friendly van service. Buy your tickets at Gaylord's. We took the metro once while in DC and it was not good in comparison to London or New York city. The day we visited Alexandria we took the roundtrip ferry, once again from Gaylord's. RT was $16. There is a high end grocery a couple of blocks from the Wyndham and the CVS on the corner has a few provisions. There is a Trader Joe and Whole Foods in Alexandria. We ate at 2 National Harbor restaurants, Harrington's and Ketchup. The locals told us Elevation Burger is really greasy food, and we found Public House to be extremely loud. I will review these under the restaurant section. Be sure to get your discount info for all the local restaurants in NH from the concierge before you go out. You can show your room card to the establishments to get your 20% discount. National Harbor has one of the three Peeps store in the US in case you want to stop by for the marshmallow treats. It''s a fun store with a few unique items, that is if you like Peeps. Gaylord's has entertainment in the bar area most evenings and they have a mini Bellagio type fountain. Downtown NH is very small and you can cover the area very quickly. The front desk at the Wyndham was friendly enough and Randall in guest servcies was pleasant. The young lady who works on the second floor area where the Big TV is set up for the kids to watch movies is very very nice and helpful. I think her name is Shondra?? I would recommend this property to those using their timeshare weeks. I probably would not go through the transportation hassle to get into DC daily if I was paying alot of money for the room. I'd stay in DC proper. We used EnviroRide car service from Dulles airport. It was $77.00 including 20% tip for a town car pick up for 2 people with 4 pieces of luggage. One of the DC forum experts recommended it. It was a nice ride. NH is not an easy place to get in to from DC even when you know the area . The highways are a mess and the connectors are confusing. We were so glad we did not try to rent a car. We just sat back and enjoyed the ride.

Room Tip: We like room 814. It is a 2 bedroom 2 bath suite. The rooms are on opposite ends of the suite whic...

We rented this time share from an independent rental company named GoodBuy Vacations and were initially very skeptical after reading subsequent reviews. We however, ended up having a great time. The room was more than spacious (two bedrooms (one with 2 full beds) and one with a king, two full bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room, and eating area-plenty of space for our family of four. The suite was also very clean.

The area around the hotel is very nicely appointed with many restaurant choices and shops. It is a bit isolated though so the prices can be a little high. My two tweens had a great time shopping at the "Peeps" store and eating Ben and Jerry's. There is also a CVS and a gourmet market within steps of the resorts and this allowed us to make and eat easy breakfasts in our room (saving time and money). The waterfront is also very nice and relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.

As for the commute into DC, we booked "Chariots for Hire", a small touring company that also provides daily shuttle service to both Union Station and the Old Post Office (in the center of DC). It never took us longer than 15 minutes to travel into the city and the bus driver was very helpful. This shuttle service leaves from the lobby of the Gaylord Convention Center across the street. After the shuttle dropped us off we were able to navigate the city very easily on the metro and/or walking. We booked this service on-line prior to traveling but I believe you can also book right in the lobby of the Gaylord.

If we were to return to DC for a vacation we would book this resort again!

This was a great location for a family vacation outside of the D.C. area. The Harbor area is very clean, feels safe and several restaurants close by. The property was very clean, had a good view, parking was right across the street. The area was not very crowded at all even during spring break time. Had to drive to the grocery store a few miles away in the Oxon Hill area. Metro was about 5 minutes to the station by car, although there is bus service to the station on the hour and half-hour during peak times. A CVS store located around corner was extremely convenient. Outdoor pool was not open but looked nice. Very quiet facility.

If you are visiting the D.C. area, this location should be a consideration. With a full kitchen and many amenities on site, the Wyndham is a great way to enjoy DC, while not having to eat every meal out. Plus, National Harbor is a great place to relax too. When monuments and other artifacts get to be too stuffy, taking a walk around National Harbor or just sitting on your balcony enjoying the view is a great option.

Very clean, up-to-date, spacious. This location is very popular, so there is a lot of hustle and bustle in the lobby, but all of that can be left behind once you reach your room.

We stayed in a presidential suite at Wyndham National Harbor for five nights with two grandparents, two adults, and four children. It was delightful! The rooms were clean and offered everything we needed. We took full advantage of the full kitchen (stopped by Safeway to shop) and ate all of our breakfasts in our suite and most dinners. We did go out one evening to Cadillac Ranch which was right around the corner and we received 20% off our bill since we were staying at the Wyndham. CVS is just a hop away and had a bunch of groceries if needed and there is a fancier market with meats, fruits/veggies etc. just a block away. The indoor pool was small but we didn't really mind as it was just a short evening activity for us after arriving back from DC. We enjoyed playing bingo one night, rented Night at the Museum the Smithsonian the day we visited the museums, and of course the kids loved the Wii room.

My main concern after reading all the reviews about National Harbor was the difficulty getting to the attractions downtown DC. We took a tour bus through DC Trails for the entire first day. It was excellent and enabled us to see SO much that we would not have been able to walk to with all of our kids. It was expensive (for us) but was worth the price. The other three days we had White House tours, Capitol tours arranged and we drove into DC. Not a bad drive AT ALL! Yes, parking cost a bit but for how much the bus/metro would have cost the 8 of us it was truly just fine. We also drove to Mt. Vernon for the day which was great too. I would HIGHLY recommend for families with many children/people to stay here if you have a car. No problem and I think the accomodations we got were great for the price...staying closer would have just given us a basic hotel room.

We had 4 adults and 4 children in a 3 BR deluxe condo at this property and were very pleased with the space and amenities. The condo was clean and well apportioned. We ate several meals in and several out at nearby restaurants. It was nice that so many eating options and shops were within walking distance and the location on the harbor was wonderful. We were prepared with our agenda of what to do each day in DC, we sat down with the concierge who gave us great advice, very specific driving directions (printed) and direction on where to park each day so that we would be close to our intended activities. There had been much written here about the hassle of bus/metro from this location, the cost to park, etc. We were so happy to have no trouble at all after we met with her and made our plans. Depending on the time of day and traffic it took from 25-45 minutes to make the commute, but there was always something interesting to see along the way and we were there at cherry blossom time and commuting in on work days.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony with a harbor view.

This is a great place to take your entire family. We had a two bedroom two bathroom suite. They have an indoor and outdoor pool, Wii room, game room, arcade. All of which keeps the kids happy. It is right on the Harbor close to entertainment and restaurants. The historic DC district is right over the bridge. Oh yes, there is a full kitchen with ALL the cooking utensils you need. That kitchen saved us a lot of money.
