“A Nice Find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

This guest house from the Phelps Dodge days has been converted into a nice guest house with large bedrooms close to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refugee. The relaxed atmosphere and the well maintained flower garden allows you to relax after a hard day of exploring and trekking. The generous breakfast and of course the innkeeper Mike makes you really feel you are a welcomed guest at his inn. A place to stay again when you return to this area.

Ajo, AZ is a remote town in transition from its days as a copper mining center. There are historic houses and buildings in town, and the spectacular Sonoran desert surrounds it. Mike, the innkeeper, has renovated the former guest house for mining company visitors into a charming B&B. Our room was clean and well-appointed. The breakfasts were excellent. I had left behind an ebook reader in the room, and Mike posted it to me without charge.

Built to house guests to the nearby copper mines, now closed some 30 years, the Inn has large rooms with hall ways on the exterior walls that accommodate desks where one can quietly work on a computer while their companion sleeps. A huge entry living room houses many magazines available for guests. The front yard is ablaze with color from the many beautiful flowers that are planted there and the backyard has a sampling of most of the cacti that one will see on hikes in nearby Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The breakfast of cornmeal waffles with blueberry sauce and ice cream was accompanied with turkey bacon and fresh fruit. A frittata the next morning. Two things, if changed, would make the experience perfect. First, have coffee available early for the risers on eastern or central time zones. Second, provide a room darkening treatment for the French doors that separate the room from the lighted hall. The host was congenial and helped us with local dining and hiking plans.

Room Tip: The rooms have private baths and three have queen beds; the fourth has two single beds. You cannot...

Luxurious this place isn't. Interesting, historic, comfortable. It's all of those things. Unless you hate bed and breakfasts, you should stay here if you're in the area. If you're going to the nearby Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (a beautiful area), you definitely should stay here. We spent about $90 a night for two nights in February and had a fine time. The Guest House was, in fact, a private guest house for many years in the 20th century for visitors and officials of the huge copper mine in Ajo. It's unusual in design. The rooms have no windows. All open onto a wraparound porch/living room. The mines closed, and the guest house stood empty, to be rescued by the family of a woman who once was an employee of the establishment. The rooms aren't huge, but they do have a good TV and full bath. There's no hot tub or pool. But there's great places to sit and read and look out at the old mining town. Breakfasts are very good. Parking is right out front. If you drive around the neighborhood, you might spot a pack of javelinas.

This was our first B & B experience and we were delighted. The inn is tastefully decorated in period South-West furniture and colours, the four poster queen-size bed in the Prescott Room was super comfortable and the huge flat screen TV was an unexpected bonus. All amenities are there: private bath, iron & board, hair dryer. Breakfast was terrific in a beautiful old dining room overlooking a gorgeous traditional desert garden: waffles with bourbon syrup, ice cream and blueberry sauce with a slice of ham and orange on the side. Orange juice and plenty of excellent coffee, of course. The friendly and attentive owner, Mike, could not have been more hospitable and the other breakfast guests had lots of travel tales to share. Unfortunately we weren’t there long enough to enjoy the huge living room. Our next trip to Ajo will hinge upon when the four-room Guest House has a vacancy.

We chose this place to stay due to its proximity to Organ Pipe, and the Inn itself became the most memorable part of the trip for me (aside from the forboding warnings to remain near your car in Organ Pipe, lest you run afoul of drug or people smugglers.) Staying there is like stepping into a page from history - it is easy to imagine yourself as a visiting Phelps Dodge engineer, stopping in to check on copper mining operations back in the 20's, when Arizona had just become a state. The town had a ghost-like quality - rail depot with weed-grown tracks, central plaza with no activity, lots of small houses built originally to house mine workers, but now serving as a bedroom community for the various Park and border services. The Inn has changed little and still evokes the ambiance of a company guest-house from times past. The owners have a family connection to Phelps Dodge.

This is a terrific B&B. The location to Organ Pipe N.M. is great. The place is clean with a varied number of themed rooms. Four I think. There are very few places in Ajo to stay. This is the best I have found. It is kind of the entrance way to Organ Pipe N.M.. The breakfast is a gourmet style with plenty of protein. Breakfast is realy good with great views of the mountainside. I cannot think of a better place to stay in Ajo.
