“Won't take this ferry again!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

Called 10 days ahead of time and was told I didn't need a reservation, because they never sold out on the early ferry. Then when we get there, they tell us we need to line up at 6:15am to make sure we get on board. 6:15 am for an 8:15am sailing! When I mentioned that they told me no res was needed, I was told that Black Ball would have NEVER said THAT!

Then we find out that to get a 12 something crossing, we need to be in line at 8:30am! 4 hour wait? I don't think so!!!

We'll be taking Washington State Ferries from now on, even if we have to miss the Olympic Peninsula, that we love!

Hello mzwhiz,

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience.

We’re very sorry to hear that there was a miscommunication when you originally inquired about making a reservation. It is possible that the customer service agent with whom you spoke was referring to the early sailing out of Victoria that day. We will take your comment under consideration to improve the way that information is communicated in the future.

While we always leave a portion of each sailing open for vehicles on a first come first serve basis, we highly recommend making a reservation for guests who want to guarantee a specific sailing time. Customers may call the departure terminal to find the current status of a specific sailing, and we can provide our best advice for a sailing’s status. Staff members will provide the most accurate information they have at the time. However, we cannot guarantee space without a reservation.

We appreciate your feedback. We hope that you’ll visit us again in the future.

Kind Regards,
Black Ball Ferry Line

“A to B no sweat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

We went from Victoria to PA. Although you have to be there 90 minutes before sailing the time passes quickly because you do the immigration formalities while you are waiting. The ferry is fine (but only has wifi win port and within 5KM of the coast). They also have some good prices in the duty free!

“walk on”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Walk on saves $$$ over driving on day trips as you can board 20 minutes b4 departure. We had reserved a local motel room, boarded the city bus that took us directly to Butchard Gardens round trip for $5. Yes, $5 per person. Ferry offers viewing options, sandwiches, etc. A pleasant 90 minute ride to Victoria, BC. Has WiFi. Good rest rooms, friendly staff.

“not BC ferries but made it safely”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

I was a bit leery going as was concerned about the parking on the ferry as in will it be tight and hard to get out. That part was ok. The customs procedure in Victoria is a bit tedious. You must be there 90 minutes before then they come to the car then you go to the passport shack for US customs then at the other end the US guy again questions you. I did not eat on board. It is an old boat and not luxurious maybe spoiled by our ferries. It is a way to get down to Oregon faster than going through Anacortes or BC ferries. It was foggy going over so no view.
Let's say it gets the job done but not as comfortable as BC ferries

Hi Cactus52,

Thank you for taking the time to review our ferry service and offer us some suggestions on how to improve our guest experience.

As a private, unsubsidized ferry operator, we endeavor to provide safe and reliable service while maintaining competitive fares and year-round service. Our ship’s amenities include an onboard cafeteria, gift shop, duty free store, ample seating and a passenger observation lounge. We are proud to provide an affordable alternative for Vancouver Island residents and tourists alike to travel between the US and Canada.

Unfortunately, we are unable to alter the wait times for vehicle passengers in Victoria, as US Customs and Border Protection requires the 90-minute pre-trip inspection period on a secured dock to properly process vehicles and passengers boarding our ferry to the US. Many of our customers express appreciation for the convenience of combining ferry travel with the predictable wait times at our border crossing. We agree that our route is definitely the most efficient choice for travelers going from Vancouver Island to Oregon.

We really appreciate your feedback, and we look forward to having you travel with us again in the near future.

Kind Regards,
Black Ball Ferry Line

“Great trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

It was slightly foggy going across the bay from Victoria to Port Angeles but it was smooth sailing. Nice gift shop on board. The trip takes some time because you have to pass through customs before you board the vessel.

Hi Gordon S.,

Thank you for taking the time to review our ferry service. We’re happy to hear that you took advantage of our on board amenities, especially the gift shop! It’s always great to hear such positive feedback from our guests.

For our future guests, we would like to clarify the time requirements for our crossing. The sailing itself is 90 minutes, and walk-on passengers are required to arrive just 20 minutes prior to their schedule sailing times. Drive-on passengers must arrive at the Port Angeles terminal 60 minutes in advance of the sailing time and at the Victoria terminal 90 minutes in advance of the sailing time.

We’re glad you enjoyed your crossing, and we look forward to having you travel with us again in the future.

Kind Regards
