I was in town for the North Olympic Discovery Marathon and booked my trip back in February. I sent an email to the Red Lion asking questions about the special marathon package and received an immediate response via email and a phone call to complete the reservation. I was impressed with the quick response and it made me comfortable that the Red Lion would be better than some of the reviews I read. Since I booked my trip most of the posted reviews had been negative so I was somewhat concerned.
When I arrived on June 3 my concerns vanished. The front desk team was quick and efficient and we had an ocean front room on the second floor (room 258). A great view of the strait and our room overlooked mile 13 of the half marathon. The room was very large with a king bed, desk, chair, mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a large bathroom. The room was quiet and we didn’t have any issues with noise from other rooms or the hallway. All of the staff we encountered during our stay were very helpful and would answer any questions. If you plan to run the NODM then this is the headquarters for the race and is right at the finish line. If you are planning a visit to the area then I think the Red Lion is an excellent choice since it central to most of the sites. I almost forgot the free wi-fi was fast and easy to use.
The hotel is convenient to the ferry to Victoria and downtown Port Angeles. There are several restaurants within a short walk…Kokopelli Grill, Bella Italia and Michaels. We ate at all three and they were excellent. We also ate twice at the Crab House, and found the restaurant to be fine despite some of the other reviews. Not on par with the other ones I mentioned, but good nonetheless.
The Olympic Peninsula is a great place to visit and I wish we had planned to stay longer. We went to Hurricane Ridge, Hoh Rain Forest, Crescent Lake, Forks, Rialto Beach, Victoria for a day. We enjoyed all of the outings, but in retrospect would have swapped the trip to Victoria and the Butchart Gardens for another day on the peninsula. The ferry ride is 90 minutes each way and you need to clear customs, so there isn’t much time for a day trip unless you opt for the 7:00 pm vs. 3:00 pm return ride.
